996 Power Intake Plenum

To take a few hundred bucks off is ridiculous. Did any of you negotiate 30% off the purchase of your new Porsche? I doubt it.
Second, it cost what it costs. I don't understand why people continually question the pricing on this piece. The product works, plain and simple. Which is more than I can say for other products offered for our cars.
It takes a tremendous amount of time and money to bring this product to the market. Not to mention, RSS doesn't have nearly the volume of say DC sports who will sell 4 millions sets of headers this year to Honda Civic owners.
I haven't seen anyone ***** about paying $1500 for a set of mufflers that give no gains at all. What do you think it cost to build and develop a set of mufflers. Probably not much. However, again... the margins have to be higher to due the significantly reduced volume compared to more main stream cars.
For example. I want a carbon fiber piece for my Ducati. My local shop does carbon. It's a really small piece that goes around the kickstand but no one makes it yet. They said I would either have to pay a small fortune for it, or get a ton of people to commit (Probably with deposits) to purchase it. He told me plain and simple that they are focusing on GSXR carbon work because of the volume. It takes a ton of time to mold and develop a carbon part, and there is a substantially better return dealing with the GSXR crowd due to the fact that there are probably 50 Suzukis to every 1 Ducati on the road.
I don't work for RSS. I do know they are not a charity and I respect the time and tooling it took to bring this piece to a retail market. Especially a piece that fits as good as stock and really enhances the HP.
Look at ECU tuning for NA porsches. Almost insignificant gains, yet people line up to spend $1000 for tuning.
If RSS could afford to sell it for $700 and still make a reasonable return on their investment, I'm sure they would. Not to mention they've already done at least one group buy. They sound reasonable to me. For you newbs to Porsche tuning, I hope this explains why things cost what they cost in this market. I used to think it's gouging as well when I first started researching parts. After talking to tons of people in the industry, I'm better educated now. Just keep you eye out for sales and Group Buys. If that is still out of budget, used stuff pops up all the time on here and ebay. I just scored a $4K dollar brand new techart wing that I could never afford (more like justify ) off ebay for $800.

Good points DeputyDog. I certainly do not feel that RSS is gouging anyone. Just making some business points; barring that how much were the intakes during the group buy and maybe we need to get another one going!

I was just going to bring up that point, from what I have seen people have no problem getting an ECU flash that maybe will yield them a 5whp gain and ignore a product for the same exact price that will present them with a real 15+ whp gain. seems kinda silly to me. NA power is expensive gentleman, I spend gobs of money trying to eek my VR6 into the low 13's after seeing how much it costs and how impractical 4:10 gears and 288 cams were for streetability I went with forced induction. if you want cheap power. buy a supercharger but don't complain about a 1000 dollars here and there to make real world power. it's senseless!
Oh and P.S. if i can justify spending over $19k in mods on a POS Volkswagen I think yall can swing a grand for a truly exceptional car!!

you guys learn to take a joke..... but it is what it is...
i blew a small fortune ( to me) to do what i wanted to my car....i knew the cost and paid for it. to say that one part is too expensive is irrelevant when you look at the factors as explained above by DD. its all about numbers people.
all of you that wnat a cheaper price.... rally yourselves together like we did months ago and get another group buy going

Well said deputydog. I couldn't have said it better myself. We're all driving porsche's people not honda civc's. The fact of the matter is, we drive expensive cars and the parts just cost more. I just bought a plenum on the last group buy (sometime in aug.) and I love it. I was going to pay retail but I caught the group buy just in time. It really makes a difference. The car pulls pretty hard from 4000 rpms and on. I also added an evo intake to compliment it. I think it's the best $1500 I've spent on my car thus far.

FYI, guys, automotion is running a 20% discount on all purchases over 400 this week, thus the power plenum they list at $995 comes in at under $800. Deputydog convinced me the mod works & it makes sense. My only concearn was heatsink. I am not sure if the automotion plenum is RSS, but they claim 30 HP on the NA 996. Mine is a 2002c2, which bone stock & with 87,000 miles dynoed at 341 Engine HP. Maybe Deputydog can chime in on this. I also put on a K&N filter setup, which unlike some has NOT caused any problems. I think the plenum will complement the increased flow I get with the K&N filter.

RSS Plenum -it's not the plenum, just part of it which directs the air more effective
I saw the price and was like most people, but I understand why it costs that much. The R&D that "Turbo Mike" put into the "post throttle body splitter." The economics - whereas you have a limited amount of people who own late model 911's, and you have to consider the profit margin part and tuner shops pay vs. what they sell it for so they too can make money. In the end, I DIY'ed like I always do. I own two sports cars, and am not afraid to make my own custom mods, I just apply physics and elbow grease.
This part also partially employs one of my addictions, to utilize the venturi effect in N/A cars. A drop in pressure = an increase in velocity. The 4 holes drilled help equalize pressure and distribution increasing efficiency as well.
I built my RSS spending $6 bucks at Walmart. I bought modeling clay that hardens immesnely after you bake it. I took a half an hour drawing the schematic and making the splitter, then baked it (stock piece and all, it's endures 275 degress just fine) after I carfully sculpted it inside the stock piece. Drilled the holes afterwards and drilled 2 screws into the back of it to anchor the clay if it were to ever break loose. Even if it does, it's nothing major, the engine will eat it.
I installed it, and it works like everyone describes, once the variocam kicks in, you notice a difference. The clay isn't going anywhere - you would be surprised - I just fashioned a 1K part for 6 bucks and 20 minutes of swap time.

Dog I look at it this way we both know it works you even went as far as to provided it with a dyno. The doubters are the ones loosing out not me. I really don't care if someone buys it or not, I did and I very happy with the results.
