What about a $120K version of a Carrera GT? Mid engine, 3100lbs, 550hp+ TT?
The Porsche Turbo MSRP is $126,600, why would Porsche build a car superior to that and charge less, let's be realistic.

If Porsche is going to build a Carrera GT junior, I bet it would be $200k+, and I doubt they would as GTs around the world would drop in price.

Some guys lose track of the fact this is a premium brand. They don't need compete with the GT-R du jour. They have staked out a unique position at a price point sub-Ferrari and Aston. Like any company they want top line revenue growth however, as shareholders demand it. They found a significant amount of growth over the past decade with Kaizen production techniques, Cayenne, expensive options, customer race cars, "special editions", etc. The next challenge for the next 24 months will be Panamera in conjunction with the takeover of VW which I can assure will be a done deal in 2008. Longer term they need a modular 911 replacement platform which should also underpin Boxster-Cayman. How they do that while rationalizing what is available in the VW pro-forma parts bin will be interesting to watch. Getting all worked up about GT-R, which is no doubt sensational, isn't.

It's funny to think that some people think that Porsche should make changes so they can "keep up" with Nissan or ANY car manufacturer for that matter.

Porsche 911 is and has been the "benchmark" for performance for 30+ years, they have NOTHING to prove to anyone

I dont like Japanese cars either, but it is faster around the 'Ring than the GT3, kept up with the 997 turbo. Couple of mods, it will beat the 997 turbo..

I agree. Nissan was using the 997 turbo as their benchmark car

There are people with 996’s that make over 700hp reliably. They have some of the most refined suspension to come on a show room floor and even more amazing aftermarket items. The computer controls, when active make almost anyone feel like Schumacher. When off, you get the most mechanically enthralling ride of a life time unlike any other car. Don’t forget the sound, especially when in aircooled form. I really don’t see the problem. Is a lap time the issue here? Some number on a track, which you will probably never get even close to using your own car on. The 911 is something you either get or don’t. Anyone can drive one, the respect part apparently isn’t there in ever instance.

As to Japanese cars. Come on! Some of the most brilliant resourceful people building well proven powerful cars for very reasonable prices. The only thing missing there is the history and respect for heritage, most importantly the feel. The same h6 you have in your 911 was the same foundation and principal for the 911gt1 that won one of the most prestigious races in the world, and continues to do year after year in other classes and series. It is also the same idea that has been powering that car since 1963. There are many reasons why Porsche sell the cars in the form they do. Stepping into suv’s and 4 doors is merely a way of adapting to the times and keeping on track as the world’s most profitable automaker. If you see a need for Porsche to change the 911 drastically you’re better off buying another car. What’s the point of saying mines faster around Nürburgring when you don’t drive there? There is more to a car then can be measured, calculated, or given a number. That’s my argument and I’m sticking to it.
