yes, many tuners here are too expensive. They take the premium car bonus.
of course you can get a VW Diesel ECU tune for 2-300 euros if you want.
on the other hand, if a tuner decides that he will map every engine on the dyno (stationary!!) and replace internals, it will cost a lot.
Unluckyly many tuner can afford to be expensive because there is so much demand for it.
Consider the price of a 996 Turbo in Europe as well....

They sell for maybe 2X the price that they do in the USA. Could be a relative price situation where the extra $10,000 in mods (USD) is relative to another $10,000 "Pounds" since the cars cost 2X in Europe.

Yes.... we crazy Americans will run it until it breaks and figure out how to back off from that point. Certainly trying to maximize on any given platform. It's in the DNA.

I'd like to repeat for the record that "internals" are a safety issue and don't necessarily give you TONS extra until you're North of 600WTQ on C16. The largest problem is that people "fillerup" on 91 octane and try to run 1.5BAR of boost. You can reasonably stress the internals of a stock Porsche without worry so long as (within reason) the operator is running C16 or Trick in the tank. The detonation creates the shaking on high boost which causes the rods to bust loose. You cut out most of the detonation risk through use of C16/Trick. It's not a perfect solution, and running Carrillo's will allow the motor to tolerate "more" detonation, but in the end, the rods are more of a failsafe than a fix. For the money though, it's worth doing you're already doing a rebuild.

1/4 mile times for SPI Sledgehammer

Okay everyone... I know you were waiting to see how the car would do at the dragstrip. I had the opportunity today to get in on a track rental day (Thanks for the short notice, Jamie! ) so we took a couple of cars out to the strip... one of them being the Sledgehammer project.

We left the racegas in it that we've been testing on and drove the car out to the track. We're running 19" HRE P40's on the car with Toyo R888's. We decided that we just wanted to see how the car would perform in its current road going form. That meant no slicks, no leaning on the tune, no taking weight out, etc... just the car and its racegas tune.

I was able to make 4 complete passes. The first 3 were wasted getting a feel for the car.

The 4th and final run for our day ended up being the best... 9.796 at 146.42

Run breakdown:

60ft 1.66
1/8 ET 6.497
1/8 MPH 117.07
1/4 ET 9.796
1/4 MPH 146.42

Driftbox in the car measured the 0-60 at 2.9 and the 0-100 in 5.2

Here's a video of the run...

After that... I drove home.

That's a good day!

i had asked tym to run my car at the track the same way i would drive it on the street. So the car was driven to the track, full weight, full air pressure on Toyo R-888. 60 - 130 was 4.9 seconds on that pass due to 2 shifts. I guess the driftbox was right on at 146 mph!

Essentially stock 3.6 with Switzer-Tune ($50,000.00??) and yahoo!!!!!!!

No one runs these cars on C16 all the time anyway. This is brilliant.
