The Turbo beats the GTR at something: best performance engine 2008

Come on guys. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It stands to reason that a guy who finds the Nissan GT-R attractive would also find these young ladies attractive.

Please define better.
Can you please give me an example a car between 2001 and 2006 that had a better engine than the E46 M was given?
Don't bring the small displacement S2000 into it. It's great but not in the same class.
From Wikipedia:
The S54 won the International Engine of the Year award overall for 2001, and also claimed the "Best New Engine" that year as well as won the 3-4 L category for six straight years in a row from 2001 through 2006 - so far. The S54 was also on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2002 through 2004.
>>>>>>>>>>
That's the longest category reign of any engine - ever. The S2000 got a category award 4 years in a row.
The new M3 engine is fantastic. Superb rev band, great flat torque band, plays chess with Kasparov while knocking out the Nordschleife - but to say it is as groundbreaking as the S54 was... I can't see anybody winning this argument. The GT3 stole that thunder a good year earlier.

It couldn't beat it's own kin!
Lighter. More powerful. But more revolutionary? - no.
Cheers,
Zubin.

I personally thought the M3 engine was pretty boring compared to the E39 M5, but I still dont recall many engine failures on the E46. Can yo ustate your source for that.

Like you I am also no fan of the M3 engine preferring the old E39 M5 engine.

It was initially thought to be limited to certain model years but that proved to be wrong. BMW simply chose to extend the warranty on all M3 engines.

Wow, never new that or heard of any failures. Cant imagine an engine with such high attrition winnig best of the year six times straight. Doesnt make much sense. Unless this is a PR module going to the highest bidder/schmoozer.

1. We don't know how many actually blew up. All we DO know is that the E46 M was a massive success sales-wise for BMW. And the engine had a lot to do with that. We all know that BMW was overly conservative on the E36 US-spec edition and wanted to make amends.
2. A supplier screwed them over for the bearing shells that were failing. This recall affected all S54 M3s built before 2003.5. All in all, BMW eventually fell on their sword, issued a recall, extended the warranty, paid the dealers 7 hours for every recall executed, gave us a full tank of gas, and that was that.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
To me, that's just a testament to the risks BMW M was willing to take for pushing the envelope of engine tolerance in 2000-2001. If you want reliability, get an Accord V6.
As for the people who say the E39 M5 engine is "better", well, more power to you. Some people like torque, some like revs. High-revs are generally harder to attain and usually take more technical wizardry. So those are the engines that win the awards.
I do not think the engine of the year awards are a PR-fest. That would be sad and if proved, I would hold the S54 in a lesser light.

Zubin.

C'mon HC, seriously?
After all the magazine claims about the GTR, you are having a hard time believing that??

Just because an engine is admired doesn't make it any more reliable. Take the average Maserati QP great car but it fails miserably in the reliability section.
