Indeed, but aren't there other basic factors like rarity that play a much bigger role than technical intricacies that appeal mainly to a niche of enthusiasts (I was about to write purists) ?

In my humble opinion - I would think rarity would better classify the 356 series. As for the holding value, I believe it's programming catching up with the wallet. Thousands of kids grew up reading/watching/learning about how spectacular the 993's were (are). As time and career advancement allowed, that is still the 'defining image' of a Porsche - and that's what they want. That won't always be true - in several decades, the 993's that are left will be 'collectables' (as 356's are now) as the buyers for those cars will see them as trophies more than a time-defining icon of their younger days and desirable drivers.<O</O
993's are the purist's Porsche, --- and rightfully so as the original, mechanical concept/design changed on the 996. Time and perspective are all that separate what is considered important to the buyer/owner in the coming years. The people buying 993's aren't the younger generations. They're the people who grew up indoctrinated/programmed to see the 993 series as the defining "Porsche". I'm old enough to feel the same way, but also embrace change and advancement. If I had the room and space, I'd own several Porsche models/years that I see/feel are the defining image of Porsches in my life. And there'd be a LOT of them!!! <O</O

Am I missing something:
1. The new 997 is a dry sump motor
2. Everything I've read (not a mechanical engineer) states the advantages of a dry sump engine, not to mention formula one uses it)

The 2009 M91 3.6tt and 3.8NA are Intergrated dry sump applications. Believe it or not the new A91 has proven more reliable and produces more power than the older dry sump M96/97 3.6/3.8 Engines on the Porsche Gravity engine dyno.
