These would not work like you think-say they are placed inside the wheel like a TPMS sensor. Then they are in one particular part of the wheel and i dunno about you but when I'm parallel parking my wheels barely go through one full revolution so whats to say the sensor isn't going to be at the top of the wheel when the bottom is against the curb? You would need a full array of sensors/a circular sensor to accomplish what you are talking about doing. It would be unfeasible and prohibitively heavy.

I'm thinking a camera, wide angle lens, mounted in the side/wing mirror could provide vision of the curb. The video could be displayed on a rear view mirror with a built-in LCD or maybe even the in-dash monitor. I guess the only trouble with that is finding a camera & lens suitable for the job that will fit in the mirror. The wing mirror is a great place for the camera too as it wont be damaged by road debris. You could even mount a camera on both sides if you so wished, with a switching unit to switch the video feed.

Just a thought.

it can be done and not be heavy at all -- camera will be heavier mirror/side skirt sensors weight will be negligible....

I was reading this in the Porsche manual. If the side mirror **** is turned to the right mirror position the mirror automatically tilts down.

Doesn't work on my Turbo though...

Love the wise-*** comedy (the truth is always funny), on this thread, but I'm also geeky enough to have put thought into it ... and I can't see the camera/visual thing working in very inclimate weather. It would have to be like the pictures of the 'curb-feelers' ... but with todays textiles, it could be quite interesting. So, what you'd want to do is incorporate something into the design of the rim that would stick out enough to 'touch' the curbing. While they would make a hell of a noise/feeling/uncomfortable feedback before you had impact with the curbing, they could be easily replaced (screwed on/off). Letting the imagination run wild (and letting the wine do some talking), invision something off the Speed Racer cartoon where spikes stood menacingly off the rims.
OK ... I'll stop now ...
