And after watching the amazing driving of this guy you can definitely tell the 'Republic' driver was no where near as skilled.

The Nissan 7:29 GTR achieved a top speed of 180mph around the Nurburgring, the stock GTR used by Driver Republic achieved a top speed of 168mph........this is a huge difference in straight line speed. In my opinion Porsche was wrong in their tire accusations. From all reports the time was achieved through power and suspension upgrades. Your experience would tell you that it is very easy to gain more power just through changes in tune, boost, intake and exhaust. All these are easy and often hidden from public scrutiny.

I would say that Chris Harris isnt as skilled as the other professionals. However these top Nurburgring drivers also achieved a 7:50's, some like Walter Rohrl a 7:45. If Walter and HVS cant get 7:29 in a stock car then no one can.

Here is some bio on Nissan's top driver. From the looks of it Mr. Suzuki isnt anywhere near as good as the other top drivers.

Toshio Suzuki

In the early nineties, whenever the end-of-season Pacific double header at Suzuka and Adelaide came up, Gerard Larrousse's team was in the habit of selling its seats to the highest bidder.

In 1993 Japanese veteran Toshio Suzuki (no relative of Aguri) snapped up one of the Larrousse-Lamborghinis for a Grand Prix debut at the late age of 38. A front-runner in Japan's top category, Japanese F3000, he had bags of sponsor money to offer Larrousse. He had been too young to be involved with the first Japanese wave in F1, when the likes of Kazuyoshi Hoshino and Masahiro Hasemi upset the regulars at their home GP at Fuji in the mid-seventies. But now, with the Japanese economy booming and Japanese F3000 receiving high international acclaim, he finally had a chance to be in the limelight for his country just once. His aims were as modest as his qualifying positions, however - the goal was taking the car to the finish unscathed, which he duly did in both races.

After his two F1 appearances Toshio returned to Japanese F3000.

I am sure there will be more and more tests at the ring to see who is faster. I don't think Porsche has anything to worry about. Time will tell.

GT-R at another track...

I'm so late to this - who actually said Nissan's 'Ring times are legit? Anyone?

Because these are real times at Laguna Seca by top drivers. Not C&D journalist drivers with a lack of seat time in cars OTHER than the GT-R.

This is actually a copy of a post I made regarding another GT-R thread:

MT 6/07, Max Angelelli driving

C6Z .....................1:40:919
997 GT3 ...............1:39.517
996 GT3 on ...........1:39s
DOT Cup Sports (my friend with lots of practice)

MT 10/2008, Randy Pobst driving:

997 TT .................1:42.5
GT-R ....................1:40.45
M3 .......................1:42.9
R8 ........................1:40.92
Shelby GT500KR ......1:44.716
Viper ACR ..............1:35.117

I give the GT-R props. It's pretty amazing but NOT a driver's car and definitely NOT a sports car/track car with it's weight.

IMO, I would classify it as a very, very quick, very capable GT car.<!-- google_ad_section_end --> <!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

So a GTR is more than 2sec faster than a 997 turbo on a 1:40 ish lap by the same driver. Multiply that by 5, and the GTR is around 10sec faster than a turbo on the Nurb. Sounds right to me.

ACR's suspension set up is too stiff for the Nurb therefore the ACR is only a little faster on the Nurb than the GTR. Nurb is not smooth like regular race tracks. GTR is designed for the Nurb.

funny thing is that the superlegera is probably 700 lbs lighter and has more bhp. Yet, the GTR was pulling away on the first two laps. Again, the numbers don't stack up. The test cars are not putting down their rated hp. The production cars are.
