Thicker steering Wheel...

Is there a big difference between the normal steering wheel and the optional thicker steering wheel. Is it that much thicker or is it a slight difference.I supposedly have the thicker steering wheel but it sure does not look like the pictured one someone put out.The picture seems like it is really thick.(I am talking about the non-multi function steering wheel). It was an option on my car but it sure seems thin.Anyway to be sure or does anyone know the real difference.I read that the thicker wheel is not really thicker but different stiching. If someone has definitive answers I would appreciate it.Even on the Porsche website the thicker steering wheel does not look that thick.........................

The thicker steering wheels is just a bit thicker than normal wheel. Most people coming from M3, M5 will feel even thicker wheels still very thin. If you want a real thick wheel, go with Techart or FVD.

I have TA wheel and in my opinion it is very thick but is also true that normal OEM is very thin just order the optional OEM thickness.

I had the standard wheel on my 987s. I thought it was too thin compared to the sport wheel so started looking for an alternative. The multifunction steering wheel from porsche is slightly padded which gives a better feel but doesnt look significantly thicker. It is similar in thickness to the sport wheel. There is also an XPA option which is thicker still , but this is a porsche exclusive option so difficult to obtain as a spare part. The Techart item is similar if not slightly thicker than the XPA option and can be specified in virtually any colour or carbon option. I think the techart wheel is the only aftermarket wheel that allows the original porsche airbag to be re used or multi function controls to be added. I went for the techart option which feels good , but to be honest does lose some of the finesse and feedback as you no longer hold the wheel with yout fingertips. There is a full list with pictures of all the wheel options on rennteam or renntech as I recall. The cheapest option is to have your existing wheel recovered and re padded , there are retailers on e bay that can do this for you.

I got the thicker wheel and would not go back. I still feel that the M3/M5 E46/E39 had the best wheel. This is a good compromise. I finally put my hands around a TA wheel and its a little too thick for my taste.

get FVD wheel with f1 paddles. It's definitely thicker than the oem one, but not as much as techart. techart is too thick for some tastes.
