Question ? about Tip vs. 6spd?

Coming from owning an Smg M3, I know the debate between 6spd. and SMG M3 owners.
Whats the deal here though. I've read so many f/s threads where members are saying things like "too bad its a tip".
From what I've read, its an upgrade option, (not cheap either) and 3/10th's quicker 0-60. And even quicker to 100.

I am considering getting into a 997 TT in the near future, and would like to know what the debate on this is.
Not meant to start a tip vs. 6spd. war here, just curious as to the pros and cons of each.
Thanks in advance.

I think (and probably going to get killed here) - its die hard manual gearbox types. IMO tip is better than a 6speed. for several reasons:

faster.
smoother (but that could be me)
good in traffic
can drink my latte when I am using it as a DD.

If you like the smg m3 - in motion action only - is very similar to the tip (I came from a m5).

but now, pdk - in the 09 models - is even better - best of both worlds and lightening fast.

Funny I own a Dinan S3-R E-46 M3 with SMG. I've had my 997TT for almost 1 year and I bought a tip. I did change out the steering wheel to the FVD paddle shift wheel. Two reasons, smaller wheel and I like the paddle shifters like on the BMW M3. You will love the tip if you like the SMG. I would never buy a manuel trans again. Take a look at this thread.

my 09 turbo arrives in a couple of weeks and i went with the tip. i came from a Z06 and the manual was fun, it was a pain in traffic. i drove both manual and tip and decided on the tip as it suited me better. actually, i found the manual required to many shifts as compared to the Z06. maybe it was gearing. either way the turbo is great though.

Tip is not SMG

SMG is way more of a thrill than the Turbo's tiptronic system. Tiptronic in the 997TT is insanely fast, but not very fun. Go with the 6speed!!

unlike what the previous poster said, pdk will not be avaialable on 09 turbos, but will be in the 10's, along with the new engine. this entire tip versus manual is part personal and part common sense. in 09, you must come to terms with the fact that after the pdk appears that the tip will say goodbye. so, if you have a tip, it will be a lot less than hot to resell. so, if you are going to buy a new 09 tip, that you better really want the tip, as reselling it won't be pleasant. and if you are going to buy a used tip, i would just make sure that you got a good deal on it. i have driven a turbo tip and i own a turbo manual-i obviously like the stick better, but i also like the tip and i could certainly see why someone would want one. but if you are getting a new one and you can wait for the pdk, i think that would be better-the only thing is that you would wind up with the new engine-whether that is good or bad, i do not know. personally, if i wanted a tip, i would try to negotiate a kick *** price on one of the few 08 new tip coupes around or a lightly used 08 or 07 coupe. or, if you are a cab guy, there are a bunch of 08 leftovers around that are cabs (many more cabs than coupes)-i would bet that you could get a great price in this economy on a leftover tt tip cab, as the 09's are now here.

Well said. That's one of the main reasons why I went for an '09 6sp.

The tiptronic is only faster in 0-60, from a roll the 6spd is faster.

The tip gearbox is based on an automatic with a torque converter, so it can't have firm and fast shifting speed like a DSG or PDK.

Here is my tip on the TIP

2008 White 997 TT Cabriolet
2005 Atlas Grey 996 TT cab
2004 Black 996 Cab
2003 Black 996 TT TIP
2002 Seal Grey 996 cab TIP

2 tips and 3 sticks.

My general observation is that I feel much more in touch with the 6 speed car and pay much closer attention to my driving and the car's performance. Hands down I prefer the stick for my daily driver (I drive about 12k/yr). My last 3 911's have been sticks.

Having said that, if you drive freeway traffic everyday, have to make a lot of phone calls / texting, let the wife drive the car (my heart rate just increased 50 beats per minute) or just want to just gas and go - the TIP is much better.

Either way - get a TT - best high performance car ever for a daily driver. I liked mercedes benz until they turned into dodge darts and the german quality went down the drain.

Not only is 0.3 sec meaningless to most people on a day to day basis, how it's achieved is not ideal. You can basically preload the turbos by standing on the brakes and winding up the engine. Can't imagine that's too good for a number of systems, and unless you're on a drag strip do you really care? The car is fast in either tranny and if not, there are a number of options for you to squeeze out quite a bit more power.

I agree with docjackson about the reasons behind the "too bad it's a tip" comments. I put more weight behind the fact that people that choose a manual tranny on a car like this cannot comprehend someone choosing a tip.

I wouldn't look at it as an "upgrade" or "speed" decision. You need to determine which would provide the greatest enjoyment of the car for you.
