Round 2 -The Sunday Drive
Yesterday it was the lip today was second most unbelievable save of my driving life.
It's was a leisurely Sunday drive from Miami to Delray Beach --four lane highway cruizing slow in lane next to the passing lane .An SUV towing a jet ski passes me in the left (passing lane) . No big deal . Then all of a sudden his tire on the ski trailer explodes .
My first reaction was to glance at my mirrors to check my surroundings . No dice . His lane had the bulk of the tire and the lane to my right had a car saw nothing and was accelerating . The car behind me was close enough that a hard brake was out of the question. All this in an instant .
My only room was within my own lane . The Suv lost control at first . I thought for sure that jet ski was going to fall off in front of me because it did go directly in front of my car like a dog wagging its tail .My girlfriend screamed as we both waited for impact but the ski did not fall off and the driver gained control . We thought we were toast .
The tire debris went into his lane and mine . The accelerating car to the right of me passed without the obstacle but as he passed he must have freaked. I had to swerve within my lane to avoid the large pieces . The small peices were about the size of marbles . I heard no impact on my car .
The SUV driver did have an emergency lane . He chose NOT use it . Instead he cut across the entire highway to the right with no tire . By then some cars had seen it and everyone slowed . He had a friend in another Suv with a jet ski further back who by then had seen it and pulled over to help his friend .
I pulled off at the first safe exit to look at my car wondering if anything hit it and that maybe we both didn't hear it .Nope .. not one blemish . I inspected the car carefully as did my girlfriend.
I kinda makes yesterdays lip scrape seem almost insignificant.

TT - I never like to hear stories like that, I'm glad everything ended up ok though for you and your GF both. Of course the fact that the car came away untouched is a nice bonus too.

lucky you weren't right behind it! had an instance going from San Diego up to Sacramento and had a GMC in front of me blow its tire, scary stuff, can't imagine seeing it happen on a tow vehicle

TAKE THAT BACK!!!! I know that was a scary experience but if things like that are going to alter how you enjoy the car, you might as well sell it and get a stationwagon I hope you covered your cars ears when you said that. Sometimes we say things we don't really mean.

The trailer wheel is so small that the tire bits nearly disintegrated . The congestion of cars plus his Suv as well as jet ski both being out of control was like this loose cannon right in front of me . Had I hit the brakes the guy behind me would have hit . I did let off the gas but still had to face whatever was in front of me and at one point it was both his SUV and jet ski both out of control . I still can't believe the ski didn't fall off onto the highway . He had no tire at all when he pulled over.

I have been hesitant only because so much time and expense went into making this car what it is with all the mods and seeing that jet ski today that almost ended up in my lap just makes me feel like I would be better off taking one of my other cars .
Perhpas it was just a tough two days.

Dodged a bullet, luckily. I hear ya on not wanting to take the car everywhere. I don't use mine as much as I should, but I can't stand the thought of something happening to it. So I either don't use it and feel bad that I don't use it...or I use it and worry that something is going to happen to it. Makes you wonder who owns who?

Man be careful out there! The lip didn't look so bad...a little prep and paint and she will be perfect. Oh and coincidence, my wife and I just happened to be at Del Ray beach all day today...perfect weather day!

I thought about this more . It's exactly how I feel too and I see that your post ends in a question.
I keep going back to the 997S being the stablemate of my 997tt instead of the M3 someday . Not now though . M3 is reliable , has free maintenance, gf loves the M3 -- and has taken a nose dive in depreciation so it's here to stay .
Yet the 997S lingers ...
