Plug the tire?

Hi. My new oem rear tire has a large tack in it. Given the low profile, high psi nature of the tire is it wise to plug the tire?

I've had good experience with patch/plug on low profile tires in the past, though I had Firestone Tire tell me they weren't comfortable doing it, so I went to Discount Tire instead and ultimately had no issues with it. You should be fine as long as it's not near the shoulder of the tire.

It's not a good idea on a performance car. I've done it, but it was just a temporary fix to get home so I wasn't hosed for tire from the tomato stand car repair shop.

Replace the tire. If you have substantial treadwear, replace both tires. It is just not worth saving a few bucks and taking the risk of a major tire failure, especially at high speeds.

If it's a street car, you will be fine but monitor it. If it's a track car, get a new tire.

Agree with above.

Plug is fine if you aren't going to track.

Be very careful regarding advise on this issue. Street cars are often taken to 100 plus which could cause a tire failure. Not worth the risk cost in my opinion. Imagine if you had a passenger with you, even at safe speed, and a failure caused injury or worse.

What would the outcome be???

Interesting but scary side story. I was at a tire shop a couple of years ago when a guy in an SUV drives up with a flat tire. I then proceeded to watch as the grease monkey plugs a hole in the sidewall of the guy's tire. Freakin' unbelievable!

If you have a cheap butt then plug the tire, if not buy a new tire and ride without worry.
