Just noticed that on a window sticker. Is this true? If so, does this mean the rods are no longer a weak link in this car and don't need to be upgraded with 700+hp?
That would be great news and make the GT2 even more attractive for power mods.

Anyone????

I talked to a porsche rep. although the part numbers show the same rod for both the 997 turbo and 997 GT2, they assured me that this was incorrect and the rods in the GT2 are indeed titanium. i hope i never have to find out first hand for myself. but it seems like it is handling the 800HP Switzer upgrade in my GT2 just fine.

It definitely states 'Titanium Connecting Rods' on the window sticker for GT2s. I was just wondering if these are built stronger and will eliminate the need for engine removal and rod upgrade for these cars when running 700+hp. That would be a huge benefit in my mind and will allow lots of bolt-ons with peace of mind. Turbos, headers, intercoolers, etc.. are comparatively easy to play around with compared to engine removal and disassembly....
Wonder how much stronger the Titanium rods are over the stock 997 TT rods....

Titanium alloys that are actually stronger than steel are quite rare. Titanium connecting rods are usually made from the alloy Ti 6AL4V. It is 55% the weight of steel, yet just as strong, and highly resistant to corrosion. Titanium is also VERY expensive.
A word of caution. Porsche MAY have decided to only reduce the reciprocating weight of the engine for increased performance. These rods may not be any "stronger" than their steel counterparts.
It would just be unwise to assume they are stronger just because they are Titanium. Porsche may be able to shed some light on this.

I had thought that as well...

But according to the 2/08 revision of PET (the updated service catalog for the 997TT and GT2), the entire block for the M9770 and M9770S are the same. The only differences noted are with the inake, exhaust, turbo, and cooling system.

My guess is that the Ti conrods would have shared the same part number as the GT3. As pointed out to me on an earlier post, even Porsche's website is incorrect...the video states the intercoolers are different, and the engine diagram shows Ti conrods...but if you look closely what is shown is a GT3 block.

Either way, the M9770 has shown it can take a real beating and still run strong.

I can't imagine that Porsche would be inaccurate on the window sticker of all things. That's too much liability. With something that big, then anyone who owns a GT2 could return it to Porsche at any time for a full refund due to false advertising. They wouldn't take that risk....

we have already seen the rods out of a 997 turbo. they seem to be very stout right from the factory. my 997 Sledgehammer currently makes 850 rwhp with stock internals and so far no issues with the rods.

I could be completely wrong. Just going by the PET catalog.
