I am just trying to sort out the truth and keep anyone from ruining an expensive set of wheels. It would be great to hear from Champion, HRE, or one of the other forged wheel manufacturers/sponsors regarding their thoughts on stripping their wheels.
Think of it this way. Sandblasting would not remove any more material then, let's say, brushing. Brushing is a very popular finish that actually requires the removal of some material to achieve the desired look.

Agreed. It is important to ensure the media is not too hard so that it damages the aluminum. We use a soft plastic media which does a good job of stripping powdercoat without harming the substrate. The media doesn't last long because it is so soft (and expensive) but it doesn't make sense to save on media only to destroy the wheels.

The more important thing in stripping is to stay away from high temp chemical stripping. There are tons of guys out there that say they strip at low temps and don't. They're stripping at 500 F. I've had strippers tell me it was fine and only for a few minutes. Sorry. It isn't fine with a forged heat-treated wheel... even for a few minutes. Low temp strips also tend to be too harsh in terms of the chemical composition so we switched to doing media blast internally a few years ago to control this and eliminate any risk from outside vendors promising one thing and doing another.

Ditto on Stuttgart Performance. They're great.

Hey HeavyChevy,

The Weight of the Factory Rear Quarter Glass Window is: 2.85 lbs.

The Weight of the Lexan Motorsport Rear Quarter Window is: 1.25 lbs.

I'll post up the rear windscreen when I get a weight on it....

Great Info Bryan, keep it coming. I'll add this to the weight thread. I know it's not directly applicable to those of us with 996's but they will be close enough.

Also, how does the Lexan rear windscreen fasten? Is it direct factory replacement glue? TIA.
