Crazy idea... removing my passenger seat for my dog?
#48
yeah i must be the only person to have gone from this:
0-24 in the city
24-31 in the burbs (house, 5 cars, dog but no kids)
31 to current in the city (apt, 2 cars, 1 dog, and my first son)
the burbs were nice, but i found i spent way too much time commuting and running errands, and not enough time enjoying life. I commute 10 mins to work now and most nights i can meet my wife and son for dinner and sometimes lunch!
there are sacrifices, i payed 2x more for my apt than my house for half the space. Private school is going to be expensive, if i cant get into my zoned school. Everyday items cost a bit more.

It doesn't really make sense to do something like this, but I say go for it. What is the issue again with reclining the seat? Is it a height issue or a length issue? If it was not height have you thought about pushing the seat all the way back and having some sort of removable platform made for the foot well to make it a longer flat area for him to sit/lay on? It would seem like this may make it possible. That was the first thought that came to mind when I was thinking about what to do.
Great danes are quite lazy breeds for the most part. They make more sense as a city dog than most people realize because they just lounge around all day. My sister has one and even as a puppy it is LAZY. It plays for about 10 minutes and then it is out like a light for the next 3 hours. Caging animals it a preference thing as well. I can definitely see the point of doing so. Funny thing is most dogs enjoy caging. It is their space and they know it. I have a friend with a dog he cages during the day and at night the dog actually voluntarily goes into the cage to sleep (the door is open and he can sleep anywhere he wants)

lol, yeah that is definitely not the norm. Although I pretty much have to agree with all that your saying, I loved living in the city and it does allow you to have a much more entertaining lifestyle. Who knows maybe Ill be back in the city soon

My akita crate trained in less than 6 months (starting at 8 weeks), not sure why a 14mo dog still needs to be crated? There is a difference between being a puppy, and needing to be crated for the purpose of house training. Dog proof the house, and let him have the run of the place while you are gone.

yeah, some people just don't get it. regardless.
well, I did it. will post pics in a seperate thread...
again, one of you mentioned the reclining seat, you really don't understand the scale of the dog, he barely fits with the seat out.

I definitely get the scale of this dog I was just wondering. My uncle has several bouviers and they are often smaller than great danes. I am looking forward to seeing what you were able to do.

Please spare us. What's to be learned/gained from seeing a dog where your passenger seat used to be? Seeing pics is more ridiculous than the original dumbass question.

I would just like to say that I am really surprised at how many people in this thread just really don't get what is going on here and I find it odd. This guy is just doing what most everyone else here has done- modifying his car to suit his desires and lifestyle. It is not the norm, but neither is modifying your car to have 700 HP. If you talk to 99% of car owners they would say that spending 20-50K modifying a car is crazy, but everyone here understands that personalizing the car is what makes ownership of a fun. That is what is normally so awesome about 6 Speed is the ability of the people here to understand that just because it isn't normal doesn't mean that it is bad. If I were to see this car out on the road with a great dane, and no passenger seat to make it possible, it would definitely make me smile and earn a thumbs up. Is it something that I would do? No, but it works for him and he loves his dogs company enough to do it. My hat is off to you for doing what works best for you to keep your dog by your side.
