If you had to race a 911 Turbo - what would you choose?

So, there is general agreement among most about going with the 996 GT2, because of its price and ability to be modified. I also talked to lead mechanics at Farnbacher Loles and Flying Lizard Motorsports - somewhat different choices there, one for the 993 TT and the other for the 996TT FWIW.

I don't know of any track insurance that will cover wheel to wheel club racing. Or any timed event. If someone does please fill me in.
I like the ACR idea, but if you are set on sticking with a 911 with turbos, then the 996 GT2 with some motorsport suspension parts and aero would certainly do the trick.
Keep us updated.

Folks-
I do a dozen DE events a year, and may return to club racing. I know the old adage - "Use a dedicated track car, perferably one that is normally aspirated".
But l like 911 turbos better, and given now that one can obtain dedicated track insurance, and suppose you wanted a so-called "dual-purpose" car, which of the following would you choose and why:
-Ruf RTurbo - heavy, really a 'collectors' car, but lots of bhp. Great on the street.
-997 GT2 - lots of luxury and expensive to buy, is it really that much faster? Great on the street.
-996 GT2 - can be heavily modified.
-993 Turbo, modifiable to about 520 bhp and maybe beyond. Great looks IMHO.
I would love to race a 993 GT2 Evo (love air-cooled cars), but has the technology advanced so far that I should really go for a 997 GT2 or 996 GT2?
All opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance - Gerry
PS- Will also post this on other forums if that is okay.

996gt2 is a handful even for the experienced. Bolting on suspension bits doesn't solve the
set up problems. 993tt, tons of factory race parts, Porsche raced this car! Bottom end good up to 520hp. You won't get killed on resale, best looking of the lot. 997GT2, you really going to track a $200k car 12 events a year. FWIW, only race cars on slicks get by my 993tt.

That's probably the understatement of the thread. No computers, no nannies, will kill you if you drive stupid, could kill you even if you drive smart.
If you are going computer-less, skip all of the above...08/09 ACR...incredible downforce and handling, unlimited power, and N/A.

In all reality, and if you really want to go club racing in a competitive class eventually, you should spend $85k on an early 996 GT3 Cup car. Naturally progress to newer Cup cars as you get better/start tracking more often. You already have some fast Turbos in your stable if you want to take something to the track for a DE. In PCA club racing there are not many turbos (any kind) that are faster than the Cups.

Trust me when I say this.
The 997 GT2 IS THAT MUCH FASTER. It is in every way a superior vehicle. People who say there isn't much difference obviously haven't owned or driven both cars much.
The power delivery and suspension difference is night and day. Yes, I have owned, driven, and tracked both.

Agree 100%!!
I have tracked both as well..my one friend who has driven and raced several types of cars said the 7GT2 is the best car Porsche has built.
The 7GT2 is easy to drive fast, the new turbos bring on the power very smoothly, Cornering I have pulled 1.65 G's with stock MPSC...with this car you would be hard pressed to find something you can't pass!!

I'd say 997 Gt2, no brainer.
It is much better than 996GT2 in every way. It is expensive though.
996 Gt2 is not that great at all, probably the worst among all gt2s. That's why they are so cheap to buy right now. It is not a steal even for the low prieces on used 996 GT2. It is waste of money!
Even a moded 996 turbo would be a much better choice than 996GT2.
You always get what you paid for.

If you want a "dedicated" DE/track car and really have the skill set to use her, why not opt for a 996 or 997 Cup Car ? When I was at the Pocono DRE on 7/3 the Metro Pres. had me ride shot gun with him in his RS America. We were following a GT3RS like white on rice in the Red/Instructor group. He said to me as we braked doing maybe 70-80 INTO an infield turn ... "look to your right" ... a second later a 997 Cup car FLEW by us INTO the infield turn doing not a penny under 100. Your talking modded 996 GT2 or a 997 GT2 ? These high HP cars may fly down the straight but on a track the Cup cars simply rule the roost. How bout a pre-owned 2007 590 HP 2300 lb. ex-Flying Lizard beastie ? You can buy one for WAY under $200K - probably $125K-$150K. I don't have the capability to really enjoy such a magnificent well sorted car, but apparently you do. You only live once baby ! Think Cup car racer.
