If you had to race a 911 Turbo - what would you choose?
Folks-
I do a dozen DE events a year, and may return to club racing. I know the old adage - "Use a dedicated track car, perferably one that is normally aspirated".
But l like 911 turbos better, and given now that one can obtain dedicated track insurance, and suppose you wanted a so-called "dual-purpose" car, which of the following would you choose and why:
-Ruf RTurbo - heavy, really a 'collectors' car, but lots of bhp. Great on the street.
-997 GT2 - lots of luxury and expensive to buy, is it really that much faster? Great on the street.
-996 GT2 - can be heavily modified.
-993 Turbo, modifiable to about 520 bhp and maybe beyond. Great looks IMHO.
I would love to race a 993 GT2 Evo (love air-cooled cars), but has the technology advanced so far that I should really go for a 997 GT2 or 996 GT2?
All opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance - Gerry
PS- Will also post this on other forums if that is okay.

I have a soft spot for 993 turbos. At your level of driving skills, any one of these cars would probably serve as a great track weapon. However, I think the 993 based cars do really shine when it comes to experiencing what a 911 really is about.

Would this be for PCA club racing?

996 Turbo, because of the price right now is a steal! and plus u can add so much more power to it much cheaper! also you can always disconnect the front drive shafts...
from the list probably i'd go with the 996 GT2

Trust me when I say this.
The 997 GT2 IS THAT MUCH FASTER. It is in every way a superior vehicle. People who say there isn't much difference obviously haven't owned or driven both cars much.
The power delivery and suspension difference is night and day. Yes, I have owned, driven, and tracked both.

You don't need to spend 997GT2 $ on a 996 GT2 to make it a better track car.
The OP is looking for a car he can take to DE's and possibly move into club racing with. This can be easily acomplished for under $100k with a 996GT2. Turning a 997GT2 into a club racer would be great, but a very expensive venture. (Possibly twice as much $)

I recommend taking a look into the race class(s) you'll be looking into in the future and build a car accordingly. The great thing about a track day car, that is not going to find it's way into a series, is that you can do anything you want with it...in that case I also say 996GT2.
Most classes are based on a power to weight scale so you'll want to think about what you can and can't do to each car based on mods you know you'll absolutely need or want. In this case I would start with a 993TT.

Indeed, there is a nice, un-modded, fresh looking 996 GT2 at RUF with 12.6k for $89,000!
