Driving a tip is easier for girls to sit on your lap while you drive =D

 

You are correct on the "no mechanical overrev threat,and maybe a slight bit quicker because no manual shift required" and you forgot to add also the pain it is to remember the 1-2 shift under full acceleration....it happens so fast, most always you will forget and hit the rev limiter, the same problem with the 2-3 rd shift, that can be a pain too when you're racing or just in a hurry to pass. Also you forgot, with a tip, your wife or girl friend or son or daughter can now drive your turbo (whoopie).

Even with all the benefits you list and I have added, there is no way with a tip you can get the enjoyment one achieves with the manual trans. You are in total control of your turbo and the need for shifting brings excitment to driving this especially outstanding sports car. And lastly, I like the manual, it keeps my loved ones from asking to drive a car they really have no business driving.

All good points sir and much of your reasoning led me towards choosing the 6 speed this time. I have had both transmissions and they are both valid choices for different purposes. I do get annoyed at morons who simply dismiss the tip out of hand.
I'll say this; I would not want to meet my old 996ttS tip at a stoplight dig. Now I'm going to go out into the sunshine and play with some gears. Enjoy!

 

Tip is usually what I see a lot of modded BMW 335i owners driving around town. They usually sit at stoplights, and "shift" into neutral to pretend like they have a stick.

All that said. The new PDK is from everything I've read; pretty slick. Faster than the manual and with 7 speeds it gets better fuel economy.

All that said I'm going to get a manual, but the new PDK makes the decision a harder one. Had SMG on my M3 and when in traffic I loved it. I think I was also faster on the track with it, but all that said I wished it was a manual 50% of the time.

 

Holeeee Crap what a bunch of self agrandizing jackasses here! I am sure everyone of you "Man pedal" studs are all professional drivers that know how to extract every ounce of performance form your hairy chested 6sp. super cars. What a joke! What is to be gained knowledge wise from someone starting a tip vs 6sp thread every 3 weeks and then the same group of super studs replying to it???? I am just awestruck by the ignorance shown in some of the posts. It is apparent that there is actually some truth to Porsche owners thinking they are better than other folks....because of the car you drive....incredible.

 

Simply the best solution is to drive both cars and see what is "right" for you. I personally love the manual, enjoy all the aspects of driving and feel much more involved. The new PDK is awesome technology, but I was bored while driving it and the experience was rather sterile. To each his own

 

In a stick you have control, and when you drive a pdk porsche it very responsive but nooooooo 6 speed..... let's be clear. my 02 was tip, and it use to change for me when i want to redline, and sometimes it would redline, it was a mess, i was happy to switch to 6 speed, plus my buddies force me to get 6 speed.lol

 

I will admit, PDK is awesome.

 

Lovin my 07 tip for almost 29K miles. Drive in sport and manual mode every day (from the minute I get in). I gotta laugh at some of the 6 speed gearbox brethern who think they are either "faster" or "sportier". I just LOVE to eat 6 speed drivers up at the stoplight ! There is nothing "sporty" about either spinning your wheels (at a stoplight) or missing a shift (which invariably occurs in the real world). Anyway, don't put down the tip unless you have lived with her for a few thousand miles. Hey man, the tip is only as boring as you are ! If you drive it like she was intended to be driven (IMHO like a $2 ho, but thats just me) she will truly exceed all of your expectations. When my lease is up in 2012 I will give a 998TT PDK version with paddles a shot (I did a 60 month lease on my 997TT). Until that time I will use her as my daily driver and possibly mod her before the lease is up. I did a long lease with the tip for business/tax reasons and I'm not sorry for even one minute that she is mine for another 2 1/2 years. I look forward to getting to driver her each day. Yeah, I miss the "fun" of rowing the box on my old 03 X50 6 speed, but I don't miss blowing shifts or spinning/chattering the wheels off the line. My 2 cents.

 

i agree with johnww 100% . I own 2007 M5 SMG and drove Porsche Tip ,but the thrill of the 6 speed is somthing else . For me manual all the way .

 

If you look at my Manual vs Tip thread that I started way back before I bought my car....it was the same answers as you found here....everyone leaning 6speed. THANK GOD I DROVE BOTH!....and didn't listen to the majority of this group. I called all kinds of speed shops as well asking their thoughts as I was going to the 600 hp kit.

I LOVE MY TIP, to be able to hit it and not have any TURBO LAG between shifts is such an awsome feeling. I will beat a 6 speed without question. I am not into road racing but having fun with the car and nailing it at the light to however fast you want..it plants you in the seat and does not RESPOOL like the 6 speeds do between shifts....

Drive one, you and will be sold as fast as I was...I am a Tippy and proud of it.
