worth waiting to buy a 997 turbo over the 996!?

anyone have any experience going through the actions to buy a car? My friend does this professionally so he knows what to look for but the over rev issue seems to be a big concern for people.

Having gone from 996 Turbo to 997 Turbo, like many members on the 6, I can clearly say that from a evolution stand point the 997 Turbo is the superior car. The interior, exterior, and the performance out of the box is at a higher level.
The only negative (some may say its a positive) on the 997 Turbo is that it feels more comfortable and refined compared to the 996 Turbo, which to me had a smaller, more raw feel (maybe more pure Porsche-esque). Since I only drive my Turbo on the weekends or really nice days, I guess its not that big a deal. If you plan on this car being a daily driver get the 997 Turbo and call it a day.

I do have a access to the actions through a friend so that is prob my plan (especially since my M3 is CPO for next 2 years)...i know this is where dealers buy their cars from nut the only thing that makes me a bit nervous is that you can't really do a through inspection/DME before the purchase of the car

No brainer. Wait to buy the 997. i waited along time to buy a car that makes my "blood boil" inside and out. If you can, buy an 09tt in a couple years. The interior and touch screen nav make anything older look archaic.

.....wait long enough and EVERYTHING gets cheaper.....
consider the following and forget the rest of the B.S. you're not going to touch a 997TT for 50K for quite a while and frankly, when you put a SIMPLE *flash* on an X-50 car, you get more horsepower (around 575hp on the pump) than most people can handle anyway. this is a killer, very low mileage example at a stunning price with S/R delete (egad!) and from a wildly reputable professional. they won't sell you some "about to break" POS high mileage track rat with tranny issues.
here's your new car: http://sloancars.com/948/2002-996-twin-turbo-meridian-silverblack-18776-miles/

thing is that the body really is the sticking point for me, for the same money i'd prob lean toward getting a GTR which i'd like to try at some point anyway

Im at 49,850 miles on my 997TT and its my DD and used to be my track car as well.
Most amazing car I've ever owned, and I always look for excuses to drive it. When I can't find an excuse I end up just driving to nowhere, and this is after nearly two years.
You will 100% not go wrong with a 997TT. Put some snow tires on for the winter and you're set all year round.
The 996TT I felt the same way as you. Mechanically the car is great, but looks wise its just lacking. And while we can argue about the technical specs of the car forever, we know that car guys value the look and feel of the car as much as the mechanical so from that regard you wouldn't be satisfied.
Now if it comes down to price thats a different story, but apples to apples, the 997TT is hands down better, and hands down worth it.

I like the interior of my 996, and though the 997 is undoubtedly better in many ways, I would have a problem putting that much money on a depreciating asset. If the money lost is trivial to you, than by all means go for it, otherwise I'd wait.

this is great stuff guys, thanks for all the input...
so i'm thinking that i may have the bug to moving into something sooner than later - (prob the spring time) and that would now mean that the GTR is in play especially in comparison to the 996TT
still weighing my options but this is where i'm leaning
