997tt Tiptronic or manual
Hey guys I'm a noob....I'm in the market for a cpo 07-08 997tt and have been contempleting between tiptronic and manual....Which one is faster or is there any difference at all? I have searched and it seems to be a toss up....Any help would be appreciated....Also is there anything I need to watch out for in terms of problems in the first gen 07? I hear sports chrono is a must....

I'd recommend searching this site, as there have been numerous discussions about the pros and cons of the transmissions. This should help:

The tip is a hair faster for 0-60 etc.. if that is your priority. Some do not like the toggle switch setup, others are fine with it. On the other hand, lots still prefer the 6spd manual to the tiptronic for driver/car interaction. And, surely there are lots of opinions out there beyond those simple statements- just check out some other threads here. (However, if you don't know how to drive a manual I guess the choice would be obvious).
The main problems appear to be choosing the right radar detector and exhaust system,ECU, and suspension mods from the variety out there to choose from, driving under posted highway speed limits and way below the limits of the car (without a track nearby), and wiping grins from faces lest they become permanent...
The cars by all accounts are extremely reliable. Many here have TT's with lots of miles, with several having considerable track time, with few issues (other than tires wearing out).
Oh and yes, the sports chrono is a preferred option.
Welcome to the jungle...LOL

Thanks for you feedback....My only worry with the tiptronic trans is that it will have poor resale in a few years with the release of pdk...I've noticed that both manual and tip are holding equal value, but once the pdk drops in price it may cause the tip to be harder to sell....I guess the only way to know is to test drive both....I'm just not sure I want to deal with a manual on our horrible freeways in socal....

6 speed all the way....no question. PDK second choice. I find as the car is so damn quick, with a tip box everything would be all too easy and may become a little boring over time. Thats how I found my 996tip after a while. I think a lot of the enjoyment you get from driving a car like this actually comes from being more "involved" and IMO a tip (and pdk, to a lesser degree) removes a lot of that "involvement" from the driver.
Over our way tip 997tt's have shown to stick around way way longer on the resale market than manuals, plus dont fetch near as much (sometimes @20k less from what ive seen advertised). Crazy given you pay more for it with a tip box if buying new.
It's way better on the track in stick than tip too . But then again if youve got a lot of traffic to deal with then tip is your way to go .
