Rumour Mobil 1 to be replaced as OEM supplier
Was told by the head tech at the dealer that Mobil 1s contract as OEM supplier is not being renewed.
Apparently, Castrol is going to be the new OEM supplier.....due to the ownership of VW which uses Castrol primarily on their products.
Just an interesting rumour as Mobil 1 has been OEM for so so long.
If true...is Castrol a good oil?

It's not like Porsche is going with the lowest bid producer.

Ironically my dealer uses Castrol. I think it is because it is easier for them to buy in bulk and used with their other dealerships that include Audi, and VW.

Castrol is hardly a 2nd rate oil. It has been the oil of choice in NASCAR for years, in engines that live at 8500 rpm for 5+ hrs of WOT at a time and crank out 800+ HP, good enough for me.

Porsche approves MANY oils for the their cars. Mobil 1 is only one of many, who happened to pay for sponsorship to have their label associated with Porsche vehicles.

I remember AGIP as being the favored motor oil of choice.
Also AMSOIL has been very popular as well......
Mobil 1 I do not see coupled to sophisticated European exotics...kind of odd matched.
People here in the states, the muscle heads specially swear by Royal Purple......
I dunno if in the end we can just say oil is oil......as long as it works against viscosity you're good to go.

My BMW M5 V10 used Castrol TWS 10-60 oil and if I’m not mistaken most of Ferrari engines.

Apologies but never intended to imply that Castrol was a 2nd rate oil. I used it when I used to drag race in my younger years.

The Honda Pro motocross and GP team were sponsored by Bel-Ray (in the 80's) and used Castrol 747 (2stroke) pre mix for years. Some of the "Mobil 1" sponsored cup teams use MOTUL. I use MOTUL in the Porsche. MOTUL like Castrol is Porsche approved. My point is there are lots of very good oil for the Porsche's.

There are many oils that are very good, but not on the "approved" list. What is more important than the "approved" or sponsorship label, is knowing what you are putting in your car...from the viscosity to the content of the oil to the Zn, P content.

I was told that many of the synthetics sold in this country, including Mobil 1 no longer have certain additives by government mandate. Don't know if that is the "Zn and P" you refer to. My mechanic uses German made Lubri Moly synthetic, which still has all the additives that were removed from Mobil 1, and it is Porsche approved.
