i have heard that the hankook is the real bargain in performance tires

much of this is opinion, many people say the PS2 is the best tire on the market

my stock bridgestones are fine, but i can say that the PS2s have a better ride...my friends turbo w/ 20s and PS2s rides softer and quieter than my 19s w/ Bridgestones

while i am not ready yet for a new set of tires, i am going to consider the hankook

I have tried them all now and these are BY FAR the best tyres for a 997

I just wish the new PS3's were N-rated...

wow,
really shocking, I was thinking about buying the RE11's when my pirellis wear out but now they're off my list.
Can you make a really good point. Shaving pounds off of unsprung weight is probably the most cost effective way to improve the performance of your car. I've read that multiplier of rotational mass is somewhere between 8-10, ie loosing 20 pounds of rotational mass is the equivalent of losing 160-200 pounds of sprung weight. Trying losing 150 pounds by replacing parts with carbon fiber!

Personally, I do think that gaining our losing 4 pounds per wheel would be noticeable. Think about how much money people will spend to eek out a few more hp with an exhaust, cats, etc. And hp gain only helps with acceleration. Decreasing rotating unsprung weight improves acceleration, braking and cornering.

Or... if you want to be adventurous and are not driving the car in the rain or snow, move to the r compound tires, either Pirelli Corsa or Michelin Cup. (There is a thread on this somewhere, but the N rating has to do with tire construction made for the specific rear engine rear heavy configuration of the 911. Anyone corrects me as needed.)

On the tirerack site below, check out the weights of the tires, (as Chris/E55AMG mentioned) some of the tires like the RE-11 are REALLY heavy, and tire being the outer border, it's the worst place that you want to gain weight.

This topic has been discussed many times before, but to make the long story short, moment of inertia is worse the further out you are in the wheel. Heaviness at the rim periphery will affect braking, acceleration, and steering much worse than if the weight is towards center. Whether a driver could feel it or not could be debated, but the effect is there.

Michelin Cup: front 20 rear 27
Pirelli Corsa: front 21 rear 26
Bridgestone Potenza RE-11: front 27 rear 32 (A near 30% weight gain in front!!)

Alex, what size PS2's are you using on 19" wheels? I don't see them in the stock size. Thanks

Imo PS2's are the best for street out of whats on offer. They are nice and quiet and, stay quiet and run smooth right till the very end. They also wear better, have better life even with some neg camber of 2 deg wound on. P Zeros are terrible. Ive had them twice now and same story each time. They get very noisey from half way and dont last or wear as well. They would be my last choice for sure. Continentals are fair and I haven t tried Bridgestones yet but i hear they arent as good as the PS2's...not as quiet or smooth when they start to wear a bit. R spec cups are the way to go for the track days (i use the Mich Cup) but for street they need a lot of heat to get the the grip levels so for DD not the greatest. P zero corsas are also great for track but dont hold up as well on the outer edges as the Mich R cup ive found. Go the PS2 and you wont look back.

PS2's for sure. Pzero's are like rocks compared to it.

Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 is still the best all around street tires.
My second choice would be RE-11 since they are really good tires for the price.

I agree. And the difference here is up to 7 lbs in one of the wheel, not even 4. This is as much as the difference between the stock wheel and super light after-market wheel! Given a properly conducted test, 2 cars, one with light, one with heavy wheel, my vote is that a majority of people will notice it.

Alcyon, thanks. I am going to use Pirelli Corsa next.

They are more expensive than cups and wear out pretty quickly.
However,If you don't drive your car very often, Corsa system is probably the best choice.

Michelin PS2's. I have had others, Conti, Pirelli, Bridgestone, and the Michelin PS are the best for me.

Michelins PS2 are not available

I need to buy a set for the Beast TT 17k miles just making too much noise. What happened with Michelin, the fronts are being sold but no rears? Are we being set up for another price hike?

Help
