Problems starting

I mentioned this on another thread a while back but the problem was intermittant then. Now it seems to happen all the time. Going to make an appointment shortly to bring it to dealer but was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions.

When I turn the key to start the car there is no turning over of the engine. After a couple of seconds the car will prompt me to depress the clutch pedal (which I have been doing - all the way to the floor). I release the clutch and turn the key back to the original position and try the whole sequence again. Sometimes for a good ten times before it finally "catches" and starts. Appears that it could be some kind of sensor that is not "seeing" that the clutch is depressed.

This is a recent development - within the last month or so.

there is a clutch position sensor that prevents anyone from cranking the car in gear...don't know if replacement is a diy item though...maybe others can chime in

^^^ Chuck is right. There's a sensor on the back of the clutch pedal which prevents you from starting the car in gear without the clutch pedal depressed.

It's really not too hard to replace, but if you're under warranty I would definitely take it to the dealer, so they have documentation of the problem, and the fix.

That's what as happening to mine, it was adjusted to press firmly almost through the floor or wouldn't start, my guy adjusted and now it works great? Next time it doesn't start try mashing your foot like through the floor and see if it starts?? After a while I kind of liked it - it kept my rowdy friends from snatching my keys and trying to slide out for a ride.

Try using your spare key and if its the same then its your ignition barrell.
If its doing it with just the one key and the other is fine then the problem is in the chip of the key.

I had a similar problem a few months back. You'd get into the car, push clutch pedal to floor, turn the key and all you'd get is a click from the back/engine area...like the starter solenoid has received power but not turning the starter motor over. It'd usually start on the next try. P told me if it keeps doing it they will replace the ignition switch. They said there have been a few but not its common. Try the other key for a few days first.

Hahaha - good advice. I did mash the clutch to the floor today and it started on the second try. I think it must be the sensor. When it goes in for an oil change I'll have the dealer look at it.

Thanks.
