upgrading my 997.1 to a GT2 or 997.2?

I wish to upgrade my 997.1 (re chip +55bhp).I was leaning towards GT2 and looking forward to better handling, performance and more "fun".However,Jeremy Clarkson gave it only 1* in his review and said the suspension was too hard causing it to hop around on bumpy roads-he thought it was dangerous, not fun. Then I looked at "fastest laps"-there,the 997.2 pdk posts times on several tracks very similar to the GT2,although on one track, the GT2 did post a better time-that surprised me.Will I have more fun with a Gt2 or is the new 997.2,with the latest technology, now a better choice-perhaps offering nearly equivalent performance, handling and fun, without the drawbacks of perhaps too hard a ride, excess road noise, tire wear etc?I'd probably "chip" the next car, whichever it is-I wonder which would be quicker-chipped GT2 or chipped 997.2 pdk.

If you're basing your purchases on what JC has to say, then you shouldn't have bought the 997 in the first place

+1. Clarkson has always hated P cars of all varieties. However, Hammond loves them and May even likes them.

997.2 PDK = Wonderful daily-driver that does everything well. World's best all-around supercar.

997 GT2 = Pure performance machine that is extremely light, nimble and thrilling to drive. Undisputed king of the 911's.

Can't go wrong with either.

Clarkson has shown a dislike for Porsches, but,on the other hand,he did once declare the Porsche 996 turbo a better car than the Ferrari 355.I guess I'll have to drive both the Gt2 and the 997.2PDK and decide.I am not over impressed by the high speed stability of my 997.1 in cross winds-I imagine that the Gt2 should be better than either the 997.1 or 997.2.My 997.1 has actually got worse re high speed stability since replacing Pirrelli P zero with MichelinPS2 on the rear.I think it is because of the less rigid sidewall of the PS2.I guess it will improve a bit when I fit PS2's to the front, also, making front and rear sidewalls equally soft.

I honestly think PDK is the only reason to spend big bucks on a 997.2

The 997.1 is a SOLID car if you're looking to mod. The improved internals and fueling (over the 996) make for a monster car. They also seem to be on fire sale with the coming of the .2

Geez with 2 different brands of tires I can't imagine how dicey your handling is at even moderate speeds.

I haven't had my car past 160 but it is definitely rock solid up to that point.

I would say 2011 GT2 or wait for the 998. I don't see the point of swap from .1 to .2 when you will see the same car. Once your car is chipped, then a stock .2 won't be faster.

About the stability, i already drove a few times at 200mph and the car is scary stable at those speeds in a way that it seems that you are driving at 100mph. Only when you are passing through others car you realize how fast you are going. My car has PS2 all around, HR springs and sways. The $1000 spent in suspension mods really transformed the car and worth every penny.

Tiago,I guess you mean 2011gt2 RS-yes,that must be an exciting car-but beyond my price range.911's are not known for the greatest stability in gusting crosswinds.Mine would be better with PS2's all round and you have highlighted another option-up grade the 997.1 and wait for the 998.Certainly the cheapest option.Lowered suspension would help with crosswind stability as less air will go under the car-must lead to less front lift as well as better road holding,of course. The 997.2 does have those active engine mounts too though, which are supposed to stop that slight rear end "lurch" just after you turn in.But,as has been said before,997.2 is really only "half" a new model-most people might not notice that one has bought a new car,if it was the same colour....Your exhaust mods highlight another area of improvement, but I didn't know you could swap cats without swapping the whole exhaust, unless you did some welding.I know an exhaust swap would help with turbo lag-my 997 is much worse in that regard, than my old 996 (also chipped),although the peak torque and power are certainly improved.

The 997.1 already got the new model depreciation, so the used value won't drop much more when the 998 came out (same thing that happened with 2000 996TT and 2005 996TTS). I only consider spend money if upgrade from the 997 to a 998. Besides having the car lowered and a bit stiffer, the GT2 is too radical for me.

Exhaust and filter decreased the lag and allowed to get steady 1.1bar in overboost mode, while when full stock i only saw 1bar steady. After chipped the lag is minimum below 3000rpm and almost none above it.

About the exhaust, yes i bought 2x 130mm race cats (same size as oem) and went to a exhaust shop for a welding job to swap it. It doesn't have any dronning issue, is quiet at idle and louder at wot to a point that i can listen now the turbos. I bet that it is as free flow as most aftermarked, if not better because the OE exhaust has 130mm interior diameter from the turbos to the muffler chambers. In the end i paid $700 for cats and labour.
