My 1st Porsche and my 1st post .... Help Please ...
Greetings to all ....
I recently ventured to Vegas for a week and had been shopping around for "a" porsche for a long time before - it was a good time to pick one up and bring up North. I had set my mind on a Cayman S and decided I would drop a TPC turbo in there and be done with it. All my research was Cayman based ...
The local Porsche dealer's yard in Vegas was pretty empty (bad times I guess) .... Decided to venture out to LA (city with a gazillion porsche dealers) but mostly tips for sale - wanted manual tranny .....
and then ... Somehow in my search all over town, I ended up driving and signing on a 2007 911TT ..... 6 speed (133 msrp new) arctic silver 39k miles (uggh) for $80.5k and CPO til 2013. I thought this was an okay deal and did the deal and have to transfer the cash TODAY
After reading more here - I see now I may have overpaid and the reputation of the porsche dealer doesn't seem so great on here ... I can get over this, it was my choice and won't have to deal with them on future service but ...
Was wondering if someone well versed can shed some light on value for my knowledge based on its mileage (kbb seems off to me)? Its in great condition but some door edge chips and couple small door dings (not removable) and someone's golf clubs seem to have done a number on the back of the seats - other than that it looks really good.
Also - there were two leaks noted - in front (rad fluid) - they repaired it and another under engine area (was told it was drip from tranny fluid change). The rear wheel well guard was also not in place properly - they have apparently fixed this. I didn't think too much because of the CPO but should I be concerned??
... also, the report showed revs in level 1 to 6 (one in each level) but the salesman said if it was of concern then it could not pass and become CPO .. On driving, the car seemed to be slower/sluggish than a 911S until it gets to about 4200rpm and turbo kicks in - salesman said turbo kicks in around then ... again, I figure I have never driven one and so this is normal and its under warranty and I am buying from a dealer that just serviced it and gave it a pass ...
Any comments welcome (except why the hell did you rush into it .... ... guess the neophyte just needed a nod (or otherwise) from some experienced folk here ...
Incidentally, I wanted to thank everyone on this forum for saving me a ton of time on transport companies ... wish I would have read up more in this section BEFORE buying .... but I was so Cayman centric at the time ...

I think you very easily could have a lower mileage car for the same approximate money.
The VTG turbos usually start spooling WAY before 4200rpm so I would have concerns with that.
I don't know that *I* would accept so many small cosmetic imperfections. It kind of says the previous owner didn't care that much and that attitude can carry through to things you don't see.
Most states have laws that give the buyer 3 days (usually) to reverse the transaction. I personally would back out of this deal and keep looking. Just tell the dealer your bank decided not to loan you the money and walk away.
Good luck either way...and welcome to the wonderful world of Porsche.

Ruf,
Thanks for your suggestions - makes sense - I guess I am hung up on the CPO being present and what seemed like a great deal at the time -Does anyone know ... if I walk, I lose my deposit? or does the deal just fold?

CPO or not..If there is any doubt..walk. Just from your description I would have a tough time spending the cash. Miles dont worry me..but if you have over revs in the 5 & 6 range that is not good. the turbo kicking in at 4k not right. How many revs in 5 & 6? Be patient and keep searching.

Hmmm - I think the consensus is to pull a Carl Lewis .... (too funny testjet)
L8Apex, thanks - I read it as being 1 occurence in 5 and 1 in 6 and yet they still CPO it - which I did question and was given a "it's still approved and okay with Porsche as the diagnostics are sent directly to their computers" i.e. there were 4 occurences in level 1 and then 1 in each level thereafter ....

So - here's a dumb question ... where's a good place to find a decent one without getting raped - CPO was important as I am new to this world and reading of one guy getting a quote of $40k for an engine ....
By the way, I think I owe you guys a ton of beers ....

You can tell them the truth or make up something if that makes it easier to walk away, but I really think you want to walk away intact and keep looking.
CPO *IS* important, but if buying from a dealer it will usually already have it or you can get a dealer to CPO it for you. Cost is usually in the $2500-$3000 range or negotiate it as part of the sale.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.

1- Go through the same level of research you went through when you were after the Cayman. Understand the potential problems to watch out for and get familiar with all the options
2- Make a list of you own absolute wanna have options and top it off with a list of the like to have options and go out hunting.
3- When you think you found the car with the options you want, my advice is to post here before you pull the trigger.
I'm sure the guys here will give great advice.
Remember that the hunt for the right car can be lots of fun too.
Good luck.

First of all, I would try and get out of the deal. In California, you should have signed a contract that allows you to return the car within 72 hours. It is an extra charge. Go through your paperwork and see if you have that.
Second, do you still live in BC Canada? If so, would Porsche even honor the warranty in Canada on a car that was CPO'd in the U.S.? You might want to check into that first. A CPO might not even be a relevant point for your needs. I know Canadian cars (almost all manufacturers) will not get their warranty's honored here in the states.

If you have not taken delivery, CA auto dealers may not keep any of your money. Just tell them you changed your mind and ask for your money back.

Sorry if this is an obvious question but
.. also, the report showed revs in level 1 to 6 (one in each level)
I see this mentioned often in posts on used cars what is this referring to, time at redline or number of times car hit fuel cut off...? Thanks

Thanks for all the amazing response ... As it turns out (for better or for worse) - bank won't finance a vehicle from out of country.
Dealer made aware and was told they need to talk to their uppers and get back to me. Will let you know how it turns out ...
k_dd - thanks - looks like it might be heading that way
Got_boost - I signed so much paper it was ridiculous - dont recall the 72 hour thing - they are holding all the paper till funds arrive. and Yes, CPO does qualify here - I believe its part of PCNA which is inclusive of Canada _ I had checked on that a while back.
Spark - have not taken delivery as yet - and Thanks - I actually didn't know you could just do that once the ink is drawn.
Yalmu - I get the gist of your comment - lol
Mav - the levels as I understand it means certain ranges in the red line - one being slightly over and 6 being fully red lined. There was a post I read where someone had mentioned the rpm ranges:
Range 1: 7300-7500 RPM
Range 2: 7500-7700 RPM
Range 3: 7700-7900 RPM
Range 4: 7900-8400 RPM
Range 5: 8400-9500 RPM
Range 6: 9500-11000 RPM
and here's another posting:

Welcome to 6speed and a possible first Porsche.
A leak here or there and a few blemishes might be expected in a car with 39K miles and a few years use in a city . The biggest concern are those level 6 over revs . That would be my dealbreaker . You may have signed all those contracts but a level 6 over rev paperwork might be enough of a factual reason to justify why you'd re evaluate the deal. Plus you have not accepted the car and you haven't paid yet . A deal is not over until you drive off the lot. I'm not saying walk .. after all .. at some point you thought this was the one and you have to make the decision .
I don't feel the price is terrible. It's not great .. but it's not bad.
The salesman is right on Turbo lag and a 997S will leap out off the line . It's lighter and normally aspirated has no lag. Plus DFI engine is an immediate response. Once those Turbos spool up though it's bye bye 997S and with a few modifications the lag can be greatly reduced.
80 grand can buy one heck of a car .
It's better to buy no car than the wrong car .
Think it over .. good luck in the decision.
One last thing .. 80K is almost a new 997S so even if you are commited in some way to that dealership (ie --you left a deposit and worry about getting it back) .. you may not be comitted to that car. They probably would sell you another car .. maybe a new car.
