997TT or 996GT3

Guys, I got my 997TT last fall and it's been good to me - photo below. However my car ADD is completely out of control and I am already lusting over something else. It's a safe bet I want to stay with Porsche. What do you think about a 996GT3? I found a clean one for ~25K less than what I can get for my 997TT. That's some sweet mod money. I don't really want a super hard-core car, but I love the twistiest more than the power... which makes me think GT3 might be the car for me. Has anyone had both and can compare / contrast? Or am I crazy to get out of my beautiful turbo?

Here's the gt3 that I am looking at:

Your thoughts are appreciated...

They are both beautiful. All I can say is that if you decide to track the turbo you will not be disappointed. Where you may be disappointed is with the power of the GT3. I drove a 2010 and it felt slow compared to my car. Just my $02..

Good luck with your decision, your turbo is beautiful..

I've owned both.

Are you planning on replacing the turbo with the GT3?

Why not a 997 GT3? I think a 996 GT3 is a major slide backwards from a 997 Turbo. Even with extensive mods you will be hard pressed to come close to the stock acceleration of the turbo. I could see a 996 GT2 possibly.

Well, the GT3 is a fantastic car. It's best environment is on the track. I did not find it to be a comfortable car to drive on a daily basis, and did not have anywhere near the torque that the 997TT had. What this translated into is a modestly quick car for daily driving. It was a bit stiff on the street, with dated body style and interior.

On the track, I found the GT3 to be very competent, far more than my 997TT before I modified it. The exhaust noise was phenomenal, and the steering feel is far superior to the 997TT, even modified. It is a much more engaging experience.

If you expect the 996GT3 to replace the 997TT as a dual purpose daily driver/track car, you may be disappointed.

Last thing...after driving the 996GT3 on the track, you will appreciate how much the ECU helps you drive the 997TT.

The 996gt3 will feel more connected at the track, but the 997tt, even in stock trim will be considerably faster on any track.

I am tempted by the 996 because I can get $20-$30k out of the transaction. That could go towards the next car, mods or tracking (which from what I see adds up quickly)

The question is will I be happy with it driving it OFF the track?

Thanks everyone for your input!

I agree with BBYWU

Hi, I am currently in the market for either a 997tt or 997GT3 and am having the same questions. I drove both cars and felt the 997tt was much better as a car to drive daily and is much faster, however, something about the handling/track ability on the GT3 keeps making me second guess myself..the GT3 is definately for an experienced driver as the back comes around easily...atleast from my experience with it....

Honestly, I think you will be disappointed and feel you've taken a step backwards.
The interior of your 997 is far better in quality and is much more modern.
The ride quality for daily driving of your 997 is much better.
The on-road performance of your 997 is light years ahead of the 996 GT3.

The whole comparo is skewed in favor of the 997 TT, specially as it is a newer generation car.

Mods will improve performance, but you will still feel you moved in retrograde on everything else.

Buy a second cheaper car for track use and twisties fun. Keep your TT. Some excellent track day cars can be had for fair money.

I own both. Totally different cars as far as comfort. The 996 GT3 is very bouncy at lower speeds, it doesn't like stop and go traffic. It is very raw with no stability aids except ABS. That is the reason I love it. The 997 tt is faster but doesn't necessarily feel it because of its lack of engine noise. My new RS rides much better than 996 GT3. The 997.1 GT3 is probably a better compromise as far as ride comfort and speed.

Crazy idea...I think you would be very dissapointed

But if the goal is to still have fun and save a lot of $...why not go with a 996TT? You would save a ton of cash and still have a very fun/fast car that you can live with every day.

Sounds like you ought to keep the 997TT...or something to consider: GT-R.

Sounds crazy, but it may fit your needs.
