RUF Roadster announced - tribute to 1967 Targa

RUF has announced plans to build a modern day version of the iconic 1967 Porsche 911 Targa.

Drawing inspiration from the past, the Roadster features a retro roll bar, a two-piece roof (made from carbon fiber), and a canvas rear section with a three-layer polyglass window.

Power is provided by a six-cylinder boxer engine which produces 294 kW (400 PS /394 hp) or 412 kW (560 PS / 553 hp) in turbo guise. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but a double-clutch gearbox and all-wheel drive are optional.

Available next year, the RUF Roadster will be priced from €195,000 ($274,705 USD / £171,210).

RUF Roadster

Alois Ruf and his team were inspired to build the RUF Roaster from a 1967 Porsche Targa. This 911 was equipped with an integrated roll cage which combines the safety of a Coupé with the fresh air feeling of a convertible. The centre piece of the roof could be removed and folded; the flexible plastic rear window can be folded also.

For your convenience, the new RUF Roadster has an aerodynamically optimized, lower rear window and two extremely light, removable roof pieces made of Carbon fibre. The "soft" rear window is made of a three-layer polyglass, an electric engine keeps the rear window tight.

There are different ways to enjoy this driving pleasure: completely enclosed, completely open, or with a closed roof and open rear window, or open roof and closed rear window.

The Roadster is available with a 294 kW (400 hp) six cylinder boxer engine and/or as a turbo with 412 kW (560 hp). Standard is a six speed gear box. Dual clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive are available as an option. This RUF car is equipped with 19 inch forged aluminium wheels.

The base price for the Roadster with combustion engine starts at Euro 195.000,- without tax.

The Roadster chassis will be available from 2011 onward with a planned limited production of electric eRUF automobiles.

I had 3 targas, a 71, a 73 and a 77. Loved the function, absolutely hated how it killed the lines of the car from the back and sides. The first thing I would do is try to de-emphasize the greenhouse in back. I can't imagine doing it on purpose!

Definitely not for me
Nevertheless,I like it
I have seen quite a few pimped-out tt's with bigger wings than the Batmobile,so what's so bad about this Targa?
It's different and not for everyone, but looks elegantly put together...except for the non leather PCM

I had forgotten how ugly those early Targa's were. And I don't want to be reminded again.

That roll hoop just spoils the lines for a cab or a coupe. Thankfully Porsche learned their lesson and you can barely notice the difference between the Targa and the coupe now.
