FVD Brombacher - Dyno Tool to measure power accurately on a rear wheel dyno, etc.

Just wanted to share a little bit of info with everyone. We just released this tool to get accurate performance numbers from rear wheel drive dynos and 4 wheel drive dynos where the rollers are not connected (essentially for dynos that cannot emmulate a true road surface). This has been created for the shops that we do business with but I thought that many 6 speed online members would also enjoy this information. This information is taken form our website and can be found here...

Dyno Tool (Accurate Dyno Testing for late model Porsche® vehicles)

We take accurate power numbers very seriously and have been doing so for the past 25 + years. FVD Brombacher has developed this vehicle performance tool for all Dynamometers (excluding dynos that front & rear rollers are firmly connected) to give you the most accurate performance gains possible.

Cars with PSM, Tiptronic, PDK and vehicles with sport mode switches cannot be tested correctly for performance on a conventional or older chassis dynamometers. Performance can only be accurately tested with a chassis dynamometer if the front and the rear rollers are firmly connected (same speed on all wheels).

The vehicle-specific electronic system measures the ABS wheel speed sensors and communicates with the digital motor engine management control unit otherwise known as the DME. If the wheel speeds (between the front and the rear wheels) are different, the ABS system sends a signal to the DME of unstable driving conditions. Once the DME receives this signal the DME cuts the power back (warning light for the ABS / PSM, Tiptronic / PDK gearboxes start to flash) and sets the vehicle in the so-called limp mode (emergency mode).

Our Dyno Tool make’s it possible to test the vehicle’s performance correctly by eliminating or bypassing the safety function (ABS / PSM, Tiptronic, PDK). The Dyno Tool is looped into the CAN BUS network and regulates the electronic signals from the ABS / PSM system and the transmission control unit (TCU).

Furthermore is it possible to test 4-wheel drive cars on a conventional 2-wheel dynamometer. For these tests the front drive shafts or the cardan shaft needs to be disconnected.

The Dyno Tool may only be used on a dynamometer and is not suitable for driving on the road. Driving on public roads with an attached Dyno Tool can lead to accidents as the ABS / PSM is switched off ! FVD is not responsible or liable for damages resulting from the improper use of the Dyno Tool!

Thanks,
Rhonda

Thanks for this info Rhonda. I had searched everywhere for info and not found it. A local guy has a Dynojet with linx (linked for awd cars) and told me I needed the Dyno-Box hooked up. I think he's mistaken b/c he has the linx setup. Good to find out what the dyno-box is though. Does it need to be "spliced" into the canbus or is it just a plug in with no telltale signs of it's use?

Your welcome. You can actually get the blue & white can bus wires out of the connector so that there are no tell tale signs of it's use. I am working on the German to english translation of the installation instructions as we speak. I will post a little later on so that you have a clear understanding.

Your right about the linx set up, the wording that I found on the Dyno Jet site is the following for the 424 linx set up..."The Dynojet 424 Linx System is a simple, highly efficient design that incorporates a high speed Multi-V Rib Belt and pulleys that eliminates potential speed differentials between the dyno drums. This technology will allow you to test modern AWD vehicles without the fear of potentially damaging the center differentials, or activating intrusive stability control systems."

He wouldn't need it but anyone with an existing 2 wheel drive dyno or an all wheel drive with the drums disconnected would benefit tremendously.

Hi Rhonda,

Could you please PM or email the price and usage details for our 997.2 PDK cars?
How difficult/intrusive is the system to hook up and use?

Thanks,

Karim

So if im reading correctly on a 424x dyno like ours that is not linked the car can be run on all 4 rollers without the driveshaft removed?? Im thrown off by this paragraph that says

"Furthermore is it possible to test 4-wheel drive cars on a conventional 2-wheel dynamometer. For these tests the front drive shafts or the cardan shaft needs to be disconnected."

What is the approximate time it takes to get the system in place to dyno the car??

Thanks!!

Mike

Mike,

In your case that's perfect, no need to remove the front driveshaft, it only boils down to hooking up the dyno box tool and putting the car on the dyno.

Initially it should not be more than 30 minutes. We provide you with connectors so that a car under development can easily be connected again, over and over.

Thanks,
Rhonda
