Slipping Clutch???

I noticed that in 1st or 2nd gear, under WOT, at around 4500rpm, my RPMs will go up but it doesn't seem that the car is going any faster. Under slower acceleration, this doesn't happen. When it does happen, I do detect a slight burning smell.

Details: I have the APR mod and it's currently set at the 93 octane program. Also, I have a GT2 clutch installed. The car has about 7800mi on it. The car has been tracked 3 times.

Is the GT2 clutch not strong enough for this OR could it give out so soon? Any comments would be much appreciated.

I think everthing you just described is the definition of a slipping clutch. Time for an upgrade clutch/pressure plate.

I hope whoever recommended a GT2 clutch setup explained that it is just as limited in handling high torque/hp applications.

The pressure plate on the Turbo and GT2 are identical, part number 996 116 027 51. The issue you are having is unlikely to be due to the clutch itself. I recommend upgrading to a Sachs 764 pressure plate.

Bob is right 764 would be best for you but you also should take new disc as your is already burned a bit.
try to accelerate from very low rpm on higher gear, this will show you true about your clutch condition.

Thanks for the replies guys... I've been reading some of the previous posts and it seems that the Sachs 764 got rave reviews.

@bbywu - I bought the car with all of the mods on it already at 5400mi. When I first got it, it never slipped. I remember the previous owner telling me the GT2 clutch was for feel and to circumvent the hydraulic leak potential.

Do you know what the cost is for the Sachs 764 plate? Install costs?

You should be able to get the 764 pp with an organic disc in the neighborhood of 1000-1200USD.

Now I understand. You probably don't have a GT2 clutch, only a slave conversion - the previous owner probably got rid of the hydraulic assist.

You probably are running the stock clutch. I'd recommend a Sachs 2 clutch and a 764 pressure plate.

Thanks Bob! Hmmm... Interesting. How much would a slave conversion cost? I was told the "GT2 clutch upgrade" that was done was in the $6K range.

Really? Removing the hydraulic assist doesn't even require opening the transmission.

$1000 in parts, labor depends but around another $1000. $6K??? Either they upgraded the clutch and pressure plate at the same time, the seller was blowing smoke up your posterior, or the seller was ripped off.

Thanks! I just emailed the shop that did the work. I'll post when they respond.

Here are the details:

Sachs Street Style Disc and Pressure Plate upgrade (650tq)
GT2 Slave Cylinder Conversion.

I verified that the pressure plate is NOT the Sachs 764 but the 752(?). I was told that the setup was meant for everyday driving (i.e. not hardcore tracking). Is the Sachs Street Style Disc = the Sachs 2 clutch? Also, given the symptoms I posted, do both the disc and plate need to be replaced or just the plate?

Can saved this gif file, I use it to reference the numbers so I don't have to keep going back to the website. The 752 is the standard pressure plate that comes with the Sachs 2 kit. You'll note it's really rated to 544 lb-ft with the included organic disc. If your tuner/shop told you 650 lb-ft tolerance, they are mistaken and I would direct them to Sach's website.

I have never changed a pressure plate without changing disc and have to defer to others with this experience. Technically, if the disc is in good shape, you should be able to simply upgrade the pressure plate. But for the cost of labor, you may want to simply swap the disc as well. Not sure how to advise you here. What Karol is saying above is that you may have burned the clutch disc a little, which makes replacing it more sensible.

As far as "every day driving not tracking," I have no idea what that really means. A Sachs 2 kit with an upgraded 764 pressure plate (what AWE Tuning has coined a Sachs 2.5 kit) gives you the exact same friction point and engagement as a stock OEM clutch setup. Furthermore, with the GT2 slave delete, you should have even better control and engagement.

If the clutch work was limited to a Sachs 2 kit and slave delete, the total cost of parts should be around $1500 for the clutch kit + about $1000 for the slave delete, and about $1200-1500 in labor costs, well under the $6K you were quoted.

Hope that helps.
