5w50 or 0w40 oil into 997.1 tt?

Hello Everyone. Book says 5w50 and 0w40 are both good. but what is the difference? what is preferred to be used? Is it true that adjustable cam spockets likes 0w40 and don't like 5w50 and tend to fail on it? Please recommend me which oil should I be using?

0w40 is too thin IMO. Mobil 1 5w50 IS a Porsche approved oil.

You probably know this... the W = winter

Multi viscosity oils were produced some time ago to help prevent/reduce wear and provide better lubrication to vehicles, especially during the start up. So, a 0w40 will have better flow characterstics in extremely cold temps. Both are full synthetics, so you're already in great shape regardless, as the additive package that include viscosity index improvers is better than the conventional products. As the oil heats up the viscosity adjusts as intended.

IMO...I prefer 0w40 for the very characteristics it provides during the startup. I'm not in a cold environment but my vehicle does sit for longer periods. I want the least amount of friction in the engine. At temp I don't know if you could identify the difference of the two.

I use Motul 300v 5W-40. Car seems using a little bit less oil with Motul and rev a little easier. Other than that, I couldn't feel any other difference.

I use Mobil 1 5w-40 TDT. The reason for using the thicker oil is it quiets the metallic rattle I get at idle.

There's a couple great oil threads on the 996tt section both here and on RL. If you have some time, read up.

Basically, 0w40 has been reformulated to comply with the EPA, and has lower zinc and phosphorous levels as a result.

There are a lot of people out there who have moved to diesel oils, which ARE approved for gasoline engines to circumvent the EPA regulations.

I am personally running Delvac 1 ESP 5w40 in my car right now, and have previously used TDT.

My $0.02

I also use 300v 5W-40. The Motul distributor told me that the oil is not meant for a daily driver's service intervals.

Am I the only one thinking that all of these 5-point oil viscosity variations were conceived by marketing departments trying to differentiate a "premium" product? Unless you drive in Northern Finland (or Minnesota ) in -60 degree weather you are fine with either oil. Stay with synthetics and your engine may outlive you.

I wouldnt run it for 10k miles that's for sure. I put 3-5 k miles on the car every year and change it 2 times every year.

PAULUNM, I have four (1 gallon containers) of Mobile 5w-40 Delvac 1 ESP which I plan on trying out on my next oil change. I understand you had great results using it. So far I am happy with TDT but I also like to test out different products to see what works best (you need to read the suggested posts above to understand why some of us use these type of oils vs Mobil 1 0W-40). This only applies to the GT1 engines in the 997.1 TT and 996 TT.

So far the IMS noise is still quiet... My IMS got noisy at around 1k miles with the TDT, presumably because the oil started to shear.

The additional anti wear additives are what attract me to the D1.
