Advice for a soon to be Porsche guy
Hi All,
I'm currently driving an 09 BMW M6 convertible. While I love it (nothing like the sound of the V10 with the top down) I can't get over my Porsche bug and am looking to get into a 911 Turbo.
I've been out test driving a 2010 911 turbo coupe with PDK and it was awesome. Dealer wants $150k for it here in Canada which is a bit steep vs US pricing - it has 15K km on it.
Anybody have thoughts on a 997.1 vs 997.2? I'm looking at 2008-2010 years and having trouble figuring out what to focus on. I hear the 997.1 can be modded to have most of the 997.2 speed and has a more reliable engine. Been reading the forums but would appreciate any advice, opinions or pointers for further research.
Looking at spending around $100K + tax, import fees, etc
I'll likely import into Canada from the US as I did with the M6. Any Canadians who have done the same with a 911 turbo? Issues, etc?
Thanks in Advance.

PDK is tough to beat even with a flashed 997.1
Reliability not yet comparable but modabilty is well known, the 997.1 is tough to beat in that department
Plan on an exhaust right away, you will miss the scream of the V10 vs. a stock 911 Turbo sound.

as stated, the 997.1 motor is race proven for years, while the new 3.8 in the 997.2 isnt and there are many discussions you can search on this topic
for your price, you can only look at a 997.1
if you want pdk (997.2) dont confuse it with tiptronic in 997.1...completely different

I also came from an M6 convertible to a 2009 (997.1) Turbo. I absolutely love the Turbo. No comparison in all regards, other than the beautiful sound of the M6 (which I still miss), even after changing the exhaust on my Turbo. Both my cars are sticks, but if you're not getting a stick, try to get the PDK (997.2). As said by others, it's a big step up from the 997.1 Tiptronic. Good luck!

Great to hear from someone who made the same switch.
Did you buy local? Seems like Porsche Canada adjusted prices down to be more inline with our dollar so not sure on importing from US - need to do some more pricing.

I would agree with Rambo1 on the PDK vs Tiptronic. HOWEVER, if you are going to get a 6-speed manual (or standard as they call it in Canada) then I would definitely get the 997.1 turbo over the 997.2 turbo because the speed difference is not all that much between the two with manual trannys. You will also save a lot of money purchasing a 2007 or 2008 vs a newer one.

Get ready to grin like a kid again. Start excersising these muscles so you don't cramp. I just joined the P car club after drooling on posters, car mag's I now have my dream car home inthe garage.
The car will do anything you ask it to (within reason). My car is 100% stock and I plan on leaving it that was operationally. It runs like crazy. Not sure where you drive but the roads in NY as not fitting for a car of this power and capability. I wish I lived in the midwest. My uncle lived in Colorado and what I would do to drive the car on those open roads!
I had an M3 and it was a great car as well, but this car is intoxicating.
Enjoy it!
There is my advice.

I bought it new from Pfaff. Pricing at the time (late 2009) was great. But if you're buying used, from what I can see, the pricing still seems much better in the US (not to mention the selection).

I just brought mine up from the US due to pricing and selection. I opted for the 2009 Manuel tranny and loads of options. I chose the 2009 because of the upgraded electronics and the added assurance of transferability Porsche warranty. In the 2 months of ownership I changed the side lights added led rear tail lights for a more up today's look, techart exhaust tips and just last nite a cargraphic exhaust. I have to say if you own a TT with stock exhaust you are missing out big time. What a treat this car is to drive, very happy!!
