Probably lack of driving.

I have no clue (sorry) which is why someone else is rebuilding my motor!

But what I have learned about rebuilds, which probably everyone else who has ever gone through the process already knows, is;
  • Don't be surprised at whatever you find when it gets taken apart,
  • Don't be surprised how long it takes,
  • Don't be surprised if you get four different opinions from three "knowledgeable" people on what needs to be done and
  • Don't be surprised at how much it costs.
If you can put up with those uncertainties, then you too are a candidate to do a major motor mod!! Imo, there really should be a support group (perhaps this is it) or at least cheap therapy for those of us going through this.........

Actually lack of driving is probably correct or a hot, dry climate. The more you drive anything or not (boats in particular ) the less problems you will have. With that the gasket probably dried out and degradation started taking over causing the leak. Look at the bright side....you caught it in time. I wonder what material it is and if it can be replaced with a material that doesnt break down so quickly.

Thanks. Evidently I've met both criteria--lol. It doesn't look any worse today so it's probably really slow. Maybe too much torque? Nevertheless, I'm changing it. Definitely got to get the car back on the road again!

Excessive crankcase pressure can cause the seal to leak as well....not saying that's happening but in these engines how do you know when there are no breathers as such to measure by. I guess you are changing the rings? Measure the liners for tanking or any ovality while you've got the pistons out. Check the piston to bore clearances, and current ring gaps.

We did a leakdown and compression test. Leakown was less than 2% and compression was consistent in all cylinders, high 160s if I remember correctly.

GT3s seem to have this problem so I wouldn't be surprised if there are turbos out there that are seeping a little too but the owners just don't know it yet.

Aha. I was reading Alex's post on your link and he had said how P had changed the seal on all 997tt cars built after that build date adding a spacer...supposedly alieviating the issue. Anyway... if it's leaking its leaking....so changing it out has to be done while the oportunity is there.

Hey Ed, The motor is out but not yet opened. Things have been a bit hectic but should be able to make some more progress on it shortly.

I have a coolant hose kit already made up - 6061 aluminum fittings with a raised flange area for easy welding.
