When my driver's side ram started leaking, I was rather happy because my car was CPO'd and I figured I'd get a whole new assembly for free as that is what I've heard happens by reading this forum. To my shock, they replaced and repaired that ram. They told me that if the other side leaks later, that can be repaired and replaced as well. So I'm not sure if it's a dealership to dealership difference but don't accept that BS that the whole wing has to be replaced. Maybe once out of warranty, they try to jack the price up and tell you the whole thing has to be replaced. I can't stress this enough to anyone keeping these cars outside of warranty/CPO, get an extended warranty! The Porsche tax is ridiculous!

The only thing that seems uncertain is the button on the dash that manually extends the OEM kit. In the 996 forum, there is a thread in which several people have discussed different methods for disabling this button in anticipation that one might get a CEL if it is pressed.

After installing the kit, I pressed the button, got a failure warning, turned the car off and back on, warming was cleared.

did you follow the instructions they gave you on how to disable the wing button without durametric? (it mentions jumping two of the spoiler wires to trick the ecu) i just bought a kit for mine... or did they update the instructions since then??

When I see a 911 with the rear spoiler up at low speeds I wonder if it is broken or is the driver just a poseur?

I think the idea it, the aero effects only come into reality at speed. Up or down at low speed low speed makes no difference. I like mine stowed when not in use but its personal opinion. The only time I extend my manually is before I detail the car.

Like any other cosmetic mod, its your car, do as you wish, make yourself happy.

There is the concern with the spoiler up at low speed this results in less air pressure over the engine compartment lid and air flow down and into and through the engine compartment could suffer.

However, I note with my 03 Turbo the engine compartment fan runs all the time the engine is running (in the 996 behavior is enabled by installing a fuse) so provided the 997 engine compartment fan runs all the time maybe the concern is more imagined than real?

As far as I can tell the fan in my 997.1TT only came on when certain temps were reached - it did not run continuously when the engine was running.

I come from a flying background where airflow matters at low speeds more than any other time. Granted I am well aware you are already on the ground in a car but low speed and airflow has massive effects on an aircraft, even while taxiing major deflections of surfaces can send you in a groundloop.
Well the 991 GT3 RS has the wing "up" at all speeds, I think the small turbo wing just dont do much in low speeds, and that its "cool" to have it be retractable is the main reason and maybe mpg's.

I believe the 997.2 rear spoiler also come up when the engine compartment reaches a certain temperature, 140f as I recall.

Actually, just for the record, the "wing" when it is down acts as a "spoiler". That is, it disrupts the airflow over the top of the car to prevent a low pressure pocket from forming at the rear of the car (think counter-clockwise rotation of the airflow) which has "some" effect on mpg. When in the up position. it acts more like a "wing" providing a measure of down force dependent upon speed and whatnot. So, in practical terms, unless you are trucking along at a buck-fifty or something, it probably doesn't matter much unless you're the German engineer who designed it. But, there is a reason it works the way it does. Happy Holidays!
