12" rear wheel width. Is it really a problem?

I am looking to change my wheels and have want to go with the OZ Ultraleggera HLT's as some have on the forum.

I did a forum search and could not get much info about the possible wearing out of the centre differential when upgrading to 12" rear's for AWD 997TT.

If it does wear out, what is the cost to replace? Also i have the 6MT and i read elsewhere than this wearing out worry is only applicable to the 6MT versions. Is this true?

The OZ's have perfect offsets in the 12" rear variant and the 11" rear will require me to run spacers. Some are running GT2 and GT3 RS wheels which have the exact offset as the OZ HLT's.

Please share your thoughts and honest experiences. I want to try the race gold HLT on my black car in 19".

Thanks

no its not a problem at all.
you can run the factory siz 235/305 or you can go up to gt2 size 245/325.
no problem whatesoever.

I have 19x8.5 (ET49) and 19x12 (ET51) Oz HLTs and had no problems at all. There has been discussion about differential issues, but - if at all - the problems would be caused by the choice of tires (diameter ratio, in particular), not the width of the wheel.
I stuck with the OEM size tires. The rear is slightly stretched, but not out of spec. So, despite going 12" in the back, I'm still on OEM size tires and safe.

thanks for the input guys!

1pennyshort, can you post a pic of your rear wheel so that i can see how stretched it looks on the OZ's.

If i run GT2 sizes, 245/325, will it cause any rubbing when lowered on springs?

Post the specs of the wheels your plan to purhcase.

Tirerack offers a 11" wide HLT wheel with a 40mm offset, which I have on my car and fits nicely.

Also moving to a 245/325 setup will drastically limit your tire selection. I think there are only 3 available "street" tires available.

I'm running 9s and 12s with stock tires. No issues whatsoever. Wider rims will improve handling, even with narrower tires.

The wider rim with the same tire will reduce the sidewall flex, thereby improving the lateral response. Note that this can also make the ride quality worse.

Crappy photo, but it should give you an idea of the 305 tire fits.

I have 20" rims that I just put 245/325 Pilot Super Sports on. Also just lowered with GMG springs/sways. No rubbing.

I believe the rear is 12" wide. I'm not sure of the offset. I had PS2 305's on the wheels previously and they looked way too stretched. The 12" rim, 325 tires and lowering filled up the well perfect for me.

Interesting point on tyre selection.

I planned on 8.5F and 12R as the offsets are perfect. At the moment I am running 15mm spacers in the rears and the 11R with ET50 will require the same spacer setup. Is the ET40 11R slightly tucked in?

I have P43 20" with 245 and 325 Michelins, plus H&R springs. No rubbing, well, maybe a little bit when turning the steering wheel fully.

Is running a 19in 345 in the rear bad for the car?

Yea, IMO that does not fit properly at all.
The bead is in the wrong location relative to the side wall.

You would do better to find the proper width /diameter tire for that wheel width.
