broke my axle today. pics inside
Soo... i broke my passenger side axle today. doesnt make sense to me as to why it broke today. i tried doing a burn out, launched it at 4-5k and this time she didnt spin tires, but spun an axle..
i didnt want to call AAA and take a 100% chance of my werks diffuser being destroyed, so i limped the car to the shop. 26 miles away. as slowly and carefully as i could...
luckily for me, Tim had a spare 997 axles for me.
here's the best part of the whole situation...
I REPLACED THE AXLE MYSELF !!!
i did most of the physical labor. i initally thought it was the driver side axle, so i did an axle job TWICE today.
big thanks to Eddie Bello and Prodigy for being there and giving me a hand when i needed man strength to muscle the axles out. And obviously a huge thanks to Tim for thinking ahead and having an axle with my name on it.
if i didnt have an LSD, i wouldnt have been able to limp the car 26 miles to the shop..
question for you guys... do you think i damaged my front wheel drive ? I assume i put some wear on the Guards clutch packs in the lsd.
here are a few pics, i'll post the rest when eddie sends em over.
i feel so awesome right now. this is the most difficult thing i've ever done in terms of working on my car. the last time i worked on it i assisted tim with removing the tranny, and before that i did my first oil change... now im fixin **** !!
last pic is awesome. i took everything apart on the driver side ..got the axle removed, and then realized there were a few ball bearings on the passenger side of the diffuser. dont mind the flip flops
btw, thats eddie bello's car in the backround. if anyone is wondering why i had to work outside rather than in the shop, prodigy's car was in there on the lift.

I'm impressed that you took this on, rep point for you.
I'm still at the changing my own oil stage. In fact, that's what I'll do today.

Great Job, very impressive that you did it without a lift.
As for the front drive train, i'm not sure if you damaged it, we'll have to wait for the experts to chime in.

Best part = you did the work yourself. That's what separates us from the Scuderia crowd: every Porsche owner is a latent hot-rodder and tinkerer. No substitute for the satisfaction achieved by working on your own cars!

front wheel drive is working great. checked it last night. the front didnt go into the wall , ergo the front drive works.
installed RSS motor mounts and used this home made contraption to find a HUGE vacuum leak i've apparently had since owning the car. (some small hose that goes into the FPR, car always had a weird idle which i just assumed was "because racecar", but i guess i can have my cake and eat it too now.
