djcl65 is infamous around these parts
Having had both the setups Tom is discussing in my car, I'm a big of the carbon clutch.

Question: is the clutch giving out due to other internal component's that may not last do to the power increase? (I.E. drive shaft. axle and so on) I would hate to dump another $6000 into the car to find out something else will fail soon.

Nope...you should be in good shape once you have a strong clutch in there.

The only time we've ever had issues with axles was after repeatedly doing some really hard launches at the drag strip. But even that was only with a car that was making over 770whp. At this stage, you'll be just fine.

i have the erp clutch and i blew an axle two weeks ago.
mind you, ive been practcing hard launches over and over and over and over and over and over and over again.

i dont think i broke the axle due to power (im stock vtg for goodness sake), i think it broke because the road wasnt even...

this clutch is awesome. i can power launch the car in 2nd gear and ride the **** out of the clutch without any damage to it whatsoever.

I know you guys out in New York are really on top of things, but launching in 2nd gear sounds like pretty abusive. Do you have trouble with first gear being too short ?

its a different type of launch. i ride my clutch in 2nd for a good few seconds... til the car is going atleast 4-5mph then i release the pedal a bit quicker... (im building boost and just enough load on the motor to start building power before i take off)

i wanted to compare 1st and 2nd gear launches. i dont have anywhere near enough power to do a 2nd gear launch for a race.. just experimenting with the car. (i would need anti-lag to have a killer 2nd gear start)

the cool thing about the clutch is that its designed to be slipped. its made to be ridden like a cheap *****, which is exactly what i do. every time that i drive the car.

anti lag w/ a 2nd gear launch on this clutch will definately yield a a respectable sub 3 second 0-60.

remember this isnt a pump and dump launch (thats what 1st gear is for )
its more of a slipping the crap out of the clutch until you build enough torque and the car just sling shots forward.

That's pretty cool. I had not been too aware of carbon clutch options for these cars, but they are probably a lot more money than the Sachs 2.5 setup I have in the car now.

I have run a Tilton carbon twin disc in the past, but didn't like the lightweight flywheel for drag launching purposes.

From what I've read the best way to launch the cars with the Sachs setup is 4000-4500rpm and quickly release. Is there a restrictor in place that prevents it from engaging all at once? There has been on every AWD car I've ever owned but I'm not sure with the rather elaborate clutch master on the 997.

Great question RIX. The clutch is important but, what prebuilt safety measures are in place for extreme abuse. I've read a few issues with axle issues. I do think they are all caused from hard launching though.

Okay I currently have two options from my installer.

1) EVOMS stage 2 clutch which includes a lighter flywheel
2) EVOMS stage 3 kit which uses the factory flywheel.

Does anyone have the EVOMS Stage 2?
Is the noise from the lightened flywheel loud or just annoying?
What benefits did you experience with the lighter flywheel on the street?

I only drive this car on the weekends. I would say that I am a slightly aggressive driver at 6AM when nobody is on the roads.

Does anyone have a recommendation on the two comparisons? Did anyone invest in a light flywheel kit and regret it?

To be honest here. My car is dealing with the extra power. Not 100% but 80% which tells me that the clutch will fail soon. HELP! I feel this decision may be an very important decision as I don't want the extreme loud "chatter and un-drivability." But yet, I still want the light flywheel and performance of my very small engine!

Get the EvoMS/Sachs "2.5" and use the stock flywheel.

It has the heavier pressure plate, and stock-ish clutch disc. The flywheel will just make it a pain in the *** to take off with sport mode on.

Najis997, Good question but, if the chatter wasn't that loud and would allow you to Rev match, would you choose the alternative? I am a slight extremist with everything. Guess I should just go for the undrivable 1500HP kit.

Rix, Do you have a lighter flywheel? If so I may need to get more information from you on the difference between sport mode and sport mode off. I have notice the difference between the two at the stock level. I always just contributed the relation to the stiffened suspension with PASM.
