Help me decide on 5558's, 5858's, 3073's and 3076's
Gents,
I am completely mind ****ed on which turbo's i want on my car.
please help me decide, and show and tell me the differences between these various turbo's on a 997 application.
i am not making my engine bigger. i am not taking apart my trunk to fit monster pumps and surge tanks.
i am looking to REPLACE both fuel pumps but keep the location stock. i will only add a surge tank if we can make it fit UNDER the plastics. i can not afford 1" of space in the actual trunk...
with that being said, the car will be run on 93 and e85. mostly 93.
the motor will be built.
i am looking for something that will give me power past 7k. but enough torque to still pull on most cars without having to downshift.
i would rather have a turbo that makes 700 tq/hp from 4k-- 8k than a turbo that makes 1000hp at 7000 but makes no power down low.
i am leaning toward precision 5558's. theyre a little bigger than a28's, but smaller than alpha 30's.
i dont like lag. i dont like downshifting. i dont like on/off power.
im looking for a useable powerband.
oh and also, a 9 second 1/4 mile and a low low low low 5 sec 60-130.
guys please give me some information and dont misguide little ole me.
i just wanna go fast like the rest of you.
help a brotha out.
at the moment, i really want to pull the trigger on 5558's, it seems like this turbo will give me everything im after, maybe not 1000hp, but 800-ish , with a useable powerband i am a-ok with.

I've got no info on turbos but i'm def interested in the answers you get as i'm in the same boat pretty soon i currently run 63.5 vgt's ,but who's tune are you gonna run & unless you have one of those standalone tunes ,you can run pump gas but you can't boost once you get an E85 tune at least thats the case in my car with a Proto e85 tune & you need bigger injectors for the e85 tune.

Given your goals, and that you already plan on building the motor, why are you against more displacement? If you want reduced lag, yet still large peak numbers, this would be most in line with your goals. And in my experience, the car never runs right when upgrading the pumps directly in the tank.

Steve K doesnt work that way, he has to consult the forum on every product from tire shine to turbos to CF diffusers.

how do you plan on running a 93 file and an e85 file on stock fuel lines and dme? are you planning on running 93 as a daily tune then drain the tank and load e85 in? if you dont how will you know what % of ethanol your running? proefi or syvecs would do the trick but i dont see any mention of that.
also on e85 your going to need larger fuel lines from front to back to push the syrup thru.

i would do small/medium gt30s, like the new gtx3071... proven to be good, i saw some tip 997tt here doing high 4s 60-130 on high boost (read e85 in your case), that should be good for 9s too, manual trans is the only limiting factor here
I had Alpha 3076, now i have some custom bigger gt3076s 0.63AR, but the difference is huge, full boost is like 400 rpms later, go with a smaller wheel gt30, hit full boost at 3700 rpms or so, maybe as your current vtgs if not sooner, you have a lot of room for big hp... at 2 bar those babies should be good for 800+ whp.
Considering you are running almost all the time 93, you WANT a smaller turbo to get very quickly into the power band.
I dont have a good knowledge about Precision Turbos but i am sure they have a competitor for gtx3071... in case you want other options.. i think 5558, as garrets... some gt3076s might do the job too.. hope it helps
If you go alpha 3076 expect full boost at about 4000 rpms, going 3.8l should help
I consider also a smaller turbo will put more stress on your engine, you have to pay somewhere in the powerband... sooner or later

32, yes im going to do lines, fuel system etc. (im just not hacking up my trunk, i need every square inch of space)
fadi, thanks for ur post. that is exactly what i was looking for.
im afraid of reliability issues doing a 3.8
(not to mention $$$$).
the car is a year round DD and it needs to start and go every single time that key goes in.

have you addressed how you plan to run 93 and e85 and lower e85 in the winter safely? piggyback?
simply having 2 files to load wont ensure you have the proper mix needed for the boost you may want to run at any given time

i'll be able to load files from my laptop.
i'll be on pump gas most of the time. (99%)
the only time i will ever run e85 will be for runs.

Im new to turbo engines. All of these numbers are a different language for me. Is there a place I can go to get educated on the different turbos on the market. Ive been reading this forum for about 6 months hoping to catch on and I still get lost in these threads. Thanks and sorry if Im off topic.
