Is the 997TT that much better than 996TT

I have a great 996TT that is modded in the best possible fashion inrealtion to looks and power. Right around 600whp and 630wtq.

I have been glancing at the 997's, ones with the PDK.

From all the research, seems everything about the 997 is just that much better, gears and engine.

I was pondering upgrading to a 997TT and run a tune and exhaust, but with that setup would it match my 996TT? Also can the 997 handle more power, are the rods still a weak point or were they upgraded too?

Thanks for any opinions.

Well, I'm going to an airstrip event on November 23rd. The list of Porche's currently signed up is as follows:

2001 Porsche 911 Turbo--(850 whp)
2001 Porsche 911 Turbo--(700 hp)
2004 Porsche 911 Turbo--(500 whp)
2007 Porsche 911 Turbo--(600 whp)
2007 Porsche 911 Turbo--(700 hp)
2007 Porsche 911 Turbo--(600 hp)
2011 Porsche 911 Turbo S--(530 hp)

I'm the 2011 Turbo S. I recently dyno'd stock on Cobb SoCal's Mustang Dyno and made 501/536. Since then, I added an IPD Plenum and a Champion/GIAC Tune. I'm going to run this way at the event and as you can see above, there are two modded 996's also signed up. One is 700 crank (probably like you) and so I'll run him and post up the results.

Head to head is the only true comparison. 60-130's are dramatically impacted by DA and slope. Doing 60-130s is just a game of finding the best conditions. My M3 will do 6.8 in the cold night air on a neg 2.5 slope and 12 hours later on the hot taramac at an Airstrip at elevation on a 0 degree slope it will do 9.0.

Im AWD so the loss is more like 25%, so 750-800. But this was on a mustang dyno, low reading. A lot of these dyne jets you can't do by numbers.

From a bolt-on perspective, yes. Once you start throwing mods at them, it really comes down to how much power you are looking for. Since you mentioned PDK, I'm assuming that you are shopping 997.2's. It has been said that their internals are weaker than the 996/997.1, but so far nobody has reached the limits of the factory internals as the current limit is fueling. Even so, with bolt-ons on a 997.2 we've trapped 135 and ran 9-second quarter miles. For having stock turbos, you are looking at a very fast car.

Now if you are looking for something that is going to trap 140+ and run 4-5 second 60-130's, I would probably hold out on further 997.2 development. It will get there, but it isn't there yet. The 997.1 can reach those numbers, but it might not be worth getting rid of your 996 for. Feel free to PM or email me and I can shoot you over some more information as to what kind of power and performance you would be looking at with various upgrades.

People usually sandbag at these events so his 700 crank may actually be 600-650+ at the wheels on a Mustang. Either way I'll post up mods of the cars I run against.

Wealth Manager, I saw you posted you car for sale last month, are you still thinking about selling it? If you decide to sell after the first of the year I may be interested. Have to wait for the annual bonus to pay out before I commit.

your loss is about 13-14%.
audi's tend to lose 25-30%

btw, youre not awd.
you have a front drive, but i iwll put $$ down that says its toast.

a 600rwhp 996 is crazy fast...
why dont u consider doing a gt2 gearbox ? it'll make your car A LOT faster...

KD Tha Greta is infamous around these parts
Having had both a 996TT and a 997TT I love both. The 997TT is a more refined, smoother version and doesn't require as much modification to get the HP upgrades needed. My 996TT was a Tiptronic but the PDK gearbox is night and day. Both great cars, both very fast but if you're looking to upgrade, go for it!

Only 997's with the PDK are the 997.2, which means you'll be working with the Direct Injection motor. While the motors have been identified as not being as strong as the Mezger motor GT1 motor in the 996/997.1 Turbos/GT2s, your power goals are within reach. Champion Motorsports has stated they've gone over 600 WHP with the stock VTGs and basic bolt-ons (software, exhaust, intercoolers & upgraded piping)

Thanks to the continued support of our tuning partners at GIAC, we have been able to develop a new proprietary software program for the .2 Turbo which delivers well over 600 wheel HP, and nearly 700 lb/ft of TQ....all using stock turbochargers.

So, on to the important stuff. Friday night we took our little beauty to the track, with nothing more then our new CMS/GIAC software, Tubi Race exhaust, Werks1 Y-Pipe & Airbox, Champion Intercoolers, IPD plenum, and a pair of drag radials on the rear wheels. The car also has a full interior. NO weight reduction was done AT ALL (especially not to the driver!!). The results speak for themselves.

This new version of our Champion Motorsport / GIAC software is available immediately from any of our authorized dealers.

And if that's not enough power, they also sell a 68mm Billet VTG Turbo upgrade (vs 65mm OEM) which will probably take over the mid/high-600 WHP area. The nice thing is the PDK will def make the car keep up with cars that have a little more than you because the 7-speed gearing and faster shifts. IN addition to Champion, BBi Autosport sells power packages for the 997.2 and I'm sure Protomotive could also whip something up for you.
