Need a new clutch - what should I know about install?
I live in a vortex of incompetence known as the DC metro area so I like to know what I should expect before I get anyone to do any work on my cars.. My clutch has been occassionally slipping on hard pulls since I got the car last year but I put a new clutch off until the weather became tolerable again.
I think I'll be fine the with the sachs 'stage 2.5' clutch since I don't think I'll do much more than tune and exhaust on my cab. How much should I expect for labor and am I likely going to need a new flywheel?

I don't know what the labour costs are over there but the job will need 8-9 hours depending on the tech doing it. Some do it in 7 hours.
Luckily when i changed mine recently, i had almost 4mm height on my flywheel contact patch which could then be reused. The minimum recommended height by porsche is 2.5mm. I did notice that the contact areas on my flywheel surface and pressure plate surface were burnt and this was due to slippage. If there are any warps on your flywheel surface, then it will need changing.
From what you described, i think your flywheel will be fine but then again it depends. I also did occasional hard pulls after my upgrades but when we opened up the transmission, the clutch still had atleast 40k miles worth of life left in it. It is was the pressure plate that was not able to handle the power and is likely to get your flywheel damaged.
Hope this helps.

A Sachs 2.5 clutch package is a little over $1600, with a new flywheel about $2500. The Porsche flat rate manual calls for the engine to be pulled at about 16 hrs, but everyone seems to actually do it by pulling the trans which takes about 8 hrs. The typical Porsche dealer will want to charge you the 16 hour flat rate, even though they don't do it that way. It's defiantly something you'd want to shop and they ought to be able to pin down their prices over the phone, there's no mystery to the job.

I did my clutch at local Porsche indy shop. They did a great job and I paid only $750! They didn't drop the motor and installed in 5 hours. I'm happy with their work and my clutch.
OP, if you want to drive up here in Philly area, I can give you their information. The shop owner is really nice guy and I'm pretty sure he will give you one of his shop car while he is working on your car.

Sounds cool! I'll give him a call after I check a few more shops around here. One shop quoted me $2100 and said that includes removing the flywheel and replacing the rear main seal... Is that standard procedure when replacing the clutch?

I went with the 2.5 and am very happy with the new clutch setup. I went ahead and replaced the flywheel since it was burnt. My clutch had plenty of life left in it but it was slipping. It seemed like the pressure plate just wasn't putting enough force on the clutch. Mine cost a lot more than you posted, if you can get it done for 2000 I would jump on it. If you are tuning, I would not go back with a stock clutch. JMHO!

Sweet.. I got a stage 2.5 kit from AWE last weekend I was mainly just curious about the install. I called Kevin and he is going to install for only $1k! He was really nice to talk to. Should be worth the 3 hrs drive. He seemed to think it's unlikely that I will need a flywheel. I haven't pushed it since I noticed it slipping under full accel.
If this all works out I'll probably be after that kline system I was talking to you about, Sam .
