Noob track prep questions
I will likely be attending my first track day in my new-to-me 997.1TT. I'm fairly experienced and have done many in my previous cars and have occasionally instructed with the Audi Club, and other organizations. I do have a few questions though since I am still learning about the 997TT.
1) (Bay Area specific) Will a bone stock 997TT pass sound at Laguna Seca on a 90db or 92 db day? If not, have people done it with turnaway tips? I'm very familiar with rigging up exhausts to pass since my previous cars have been highly modified and loud, but I was hoping a stock 997TT might pass.
2) Pads - Do the OEM/stock pads hold up to track use? What pads do most people use?
3) Wheel options - what are the popular lighter-weight wheel options? The price points I'm seeing for some wheels are nosebleed high, and yet I almost never see weights posted or considered. Seems like many purchase just for looks.
4) Harness mounting options - are there any harness mounting options that do not involve bolting in a cage or something that essentially renders the back seat useless? Any comments or feedback on the Brey Krause options I've seen? How long does it take to install and remove?
5) Alignment - any recommendations or guidelines? Tire pressures?
Sorry for all the questions, but I'm a bit surprised that very few of the track-oriented question-and-answer threads that I've turned up in searches are in the 997TT forum. I certainly expect to see lots in the GT3 sections, but I really haven't turned up much that seems to relate to 997TTs specifically.

I have stock pads on mine, I did have Motul 600 fluid in the car. I just ran 4/30 min sessions at Autobahn Country Club and have zero issues. No brake fade. Only thing that I think sucks was the stock turbo seats. I was slipping and sliding around.

I would think a stock TT would be fine on decibels, they just aren't that loud.
I run Pagid sports on the track, very nice.
I use a CG lock with my belt, better than nothing, but anxious to hear any one weigh in on non roll bar belting options.
I heard the 997 lobster claw wheels are super light, picked up a pristine used set for $600. The bigger question is tires...

I've only done 5 track days on a close to stock TT on Pilot Super Sports, so can't offer significant experience. But I expect...
1. You'll be below the sound limit
2. Stock are fine and my fronts lasted me 15k km and 4 track days
3. There's a company listing well priced monoblock forged wheels on here. Otherwise a set of second hand Champions or OZ forged wheels
4. Unsure. Harness bar?
5. If you're running road tyres, max OEM up front (-1.1) and -1.9 rear camber. You'll need new LCAs to get more up front from what I understand and you'll need this if you go to a stickier tyre (hence my recent post in RL ) Not yet sure in toe settings, welcome input

I would think the only thing needed is more neg front camber. Turn in on this car is really bad, understeers like a pig (until you do something stupid and then you get snap oversteer) and with stock camber you will eat up stock tires fast. Otherwise it's a stout track car from the factory.

You really can't/shouldn't use 5/6-point harnesses with the factory seats. For starters you may want to stick with stock belts and a CG-lock type device. I've been kicking around the same considerations in my mind - big leap to do a rollbar, seats, belts, wheels/tires.

Glad to see these threads come up. Not sure what car you're coming from but the TT may feel heavy especially at Laguna. What day are you there? I'll be there 11/7. Comments below.
1. Yes but you'll be close to 90. FWIW I have tubi's "street" exhaust and I blow a 96.6-97.4 depending on the day. Turn Pipes do work, an option if you do change your exhaust.
2. Although the OEM pads will be sufficient for the average driver given you have several days under your belt along with instructing I'd suggest moving to an aggressive compound(w/ stock rotors if they're healthy) . Most popular tested, cost effective pads out there than can be run to the backing plate include . PFC-08 & 11 Compounds and Ferodo DS1.11. Laguna is hard on brakes, at minimum ensure you have fresh racing racing fluid(Motul,Endless etc).
3. OZ is a cost effective quality choice. Look in classified and or on Renlist, they come up often.
4. As Campbellcj stated no go unless you have seats with pass through.
5. Alignment- given your limited with OEM setup max your front camber and rear to -1.6 to -1.8. The car will push without suspension mods. Tire pressures change with compounds but I would start with cold Front 28, Rear 30. Goal is a 34-36 hot pressure, again varying with compound.

These are the wheels I was referring to, unsure on weight. http://rennlist.com/forums/showthrea...=897962&page=1

my buddy owns the company, well worth it for an occasional track day. http://www.cg-lock.com/index.html

Not a bad product or idea. As an alternative you can push your seat back as far as possible pull on shoulder harness to lock belt tension lap belt then slide seat forward. Essentially same thing.
