Clatter when shutting down Engine

Sorry for the newbe question, I did a search but didn't see anything. This is my first TT and I don't know if this is normal. When I turn off the engine I get a second or two of fairly loud clatter from the engine area. Normal? Thanks.

Yes, sounds like the same thing. I almost always have the clutch out when I shut down the engine. I tried it this morning with the clutch in and there was much less noise. Anyone else notice this? FWIW, I only have about 160 miles on the car so far.

Yes, they all do it, but have your dealer eyeball it to be sure.

Thanks Chris, just what I was hoping to hear. Guess I'm a little paranoid. Is it the flywheel?

yup, I was wondering this myself. Im a newbie to the TT too. it sounds like the noise is coming more from the front of the car than the rear.

This is my 1st Porsche as well. I thought the chatter was part of the flat 6 design. But now I think it has to do with the muffler's as I just changed mine and the noise has gone away.. Or is that just a coincident?

Why is the clutch out? Leave it in gear. Brakes are not fool-proof.

I get the same thing but not every time. Its sort of a knocking sound before it dies. Has anyone ever stepped on the gas with no radio on and heard what sounds like a whine comming from the speakers (even happens with the speakers off)? Its directly coorelated to the rpms of the engine. Next time you drive your TT turn the radio off and listen for any vibrations upon take off? I have a few anoying ones (not all the time of course) and it seems to be coming from the center of the dashboard (by the wart) or the steering wheel area? I am not trying to be so fussy but you would think a $150K car would be tight as a drum? I do expect some noises with a sports car having 480 HP, all wheel drive, a clutch, and limited slip, etc. I was just wondering if this is normal for a turbo? I am sure others probably don't pay so much attention to these things? Rattles, vibrations, etc drive me nuts!

I agree with you. It's tough for a car with a stiff suspension to be rattle free, but a car like this should be relatively tight w/o a lot of squeaks and rattles given the price. My C2S had the worst sunroof rattle which drove me absolutely crazy. Hope my TT is better.

I can't comment on the clattering sound on the TT but my previous Z06 did the same thing when shutting down.

Engine Clatter

A useful and reassuring thread. I have about 8,000 miles on my 997 TT and have often wondered (and worried) about the brief clatter upon engine shut down. After reading previous posts, I turned off the engine consecutively with the clutch out and the clutch in. A very notable difference with almost no clatter with clutch in. Fortunately, no vibration from the speakers.
