turbo tip vs. stick

i know it's common knowledge by now that from 0 to 60 the tip is faster on the turbo than driving stick. i was still wondering however, in your opinions, whether you believe stick is funner and/or better at the track though in straight line speed it lags behind

sorry if repost

Go with the 6 speed and get the short shift option. This is definitely a lot of fun!

I feel much more involved in driving the car with a stick. Stick with short shift kit. In Europe, though, I understand most Turbos are sold with Tip.

My 997 Turbo is a Tip; I have a build slot confirmed for 2008 and the next car will be a six speed. While the Tip is quick, the trade offs include isolation from control, unwanted shifts, and a less engaging driving experience. It reminds me of the SL55 but possesses considerably more responsive handling.

Unless someone has an orthopedic issue, I can't imagine ordering a TT with a tip. A tip, from my POV, defeats the purpose of having a 911...a connected driving experience that demands a driver's attention and enhances a driver's experience.

Manual with the SSK...FTW

luckily i had i chance to drive a tip before making my choice. the 6 speed is definitely the way to go with this car. the tip is only faster out of the hole since you can launch on boost, but from a roll, the 6 speed is comparable.

What about a "Talking on the cell phone, drinking my morning grande drip and mixing up my ipod" issue? Where does that leave me?

JMO, bro.

Of course, I am answering my pager, talking to the hospital on my handsfree, drinking my latte, and listening to the radio in my former stick 997 C2S without any difficulties on my 25 mile morning commute...

6-speed. . .

It's 'funner'.

In Australia it would leave you with a suspended drivers licence!

The only time the tip is faster than the stick 0-60 is when you power brake to build boost off the line. Good for getting personal best acceleration times, but used very infrequently otherwise. I am a big lover of automatics but I feel there are better car choices to go with if you want an auto. For 997 911 Turbo go with the stick, you wont regret it. (Especially if you want to do performance mods)

Or wait a year...the Porsche dsg is coming....and they just took over VW (audi)......so they have their own technology and can make sure it is at least as good as the Audi stuff.....

Just a thought.

I have a stick and love it, OEM ssk is perfect (B&M I have been told makes it for Porsche).

one of the mags did a test a while ago on them...the tip ran 11.6@122 and the manual 11.7@123, manual is slower but traps faster and is more rewarding to drive.

My wife wants to get a 4-seat convertible. I keep thinking a 997 Turbo Cabriolet with tiptronic might be just the ticket...

But for performance driving (including dragstrip) -- yes, 6-speed, hands down until the DSG arrives.
