White smoke on cold startup
#2
My (limited) understanding is that it is normal for boxer engines. Beacuse the cylinders are horizontal , a little engine oil can seep past the rings and into the top of the cylinder after the engine has been stopped for a few hours. This oil is burnt up in the few few seconds after starting of course. It's not a good look when you fire up the engine in front of an audience!

I was just about to ask this same question... I started my car after sitting for a few days and got a cloud of white smoke! Certinally seems wrong to me for a car with 2000 miles. Is this normal???

Hi Sharkster, newbie here! (first post). I have the same problem also. I know my way around cars pretty well. I think that it is strange for any newish car to blow smoke on startup. Mine has around 5000miles on it now, uses a bit of oil, and after it has sat for a bit it really blows a lot of white smoke.
I have owned a number of turbo cars in the past, usually the white smoke is a little scary like gaskets going or rings warn etc.
I have noticed from time to time when booting it at night a lot of smoke/gunk comes out the exhaust also.
I'm not that worried about it, but it is a little embarrasing when the smoke comes out in the carpark on a GBP 100K car!
Do you know exactly what causes it?
Many thanks.

I have had the same issue a couple of times. Seems to happen when I have been out for a spirited drive and it sits overnight. Goes away quickly, but it sure is was a cause for concern the first time it happened.

Cheers 997 Turbo Tip - Actually this video advertising an exhaust shows the problem, although it does look worse than mine! : http://blurbdesigns.fileburst.com/sc...bq/P997-02.wmv
Worries me, as these cars are pretty new. What are they going to do at 30,000-40,000 miles?

Perfectly normal for these cars. My dealer says it looks like London fog in the mornings when they're shuffling the pcars around the lot
