997 vs. BMW 335i Coupe
I am wondering about performance only. Can you even compare?
The 997 hands down for the soul and character.
But the engine and handling? The current 335i is as powerful as the soon to be replaced M3.
997: 273 ft lb. with 325 hp vs. 335i: 300 ft lb. with 300 hp.
Any comment is welcome.

997/997s > 335i
Stock 997/997s vs Procede 335i
997/997s < 335i.
With a piggyback chip alone ,the 335i will gain about 80hp & 100 ft lb torque.

I agree with the sentiment, I never get the whole numbers comparison thing - there is just more to what makes a car brilliant and things involved with the enjoyment of driving. Which brings me to the BMW, to me the interior design and looks are wanting (not to mention the local BMW service) - and those are things that contribute to making a car enjoyable IMHO. Never even made it to a test drive to see how the steering feedback & handling, is but from the reviews it sounds like it is not nec. on par with older BMWs much less the Porsche, which is really too bad if it is true.
To the OP - why not go on a test drive of both and tell us what you think? I'd be curious of any comparo impressions.

If I had the choice I would pick up the Carrera without a doubt in my mind anyway.

I doubt many would cross shop the 335 and a 997.
Personally I'd rather have the upcoming 135i than the 335. I don't care much for the interior or the exterior of the 335 and IMO it's too heavy.
A tuned 135 could be so fast I could probably overlook the aesthetics.

Your opinion is your opinion, so be it. I just personally think your statement was blatantly asinine and quite humorous in overall terms of the masses. For you to judge what you personally believe is "correct" for the population regarding an automobile / sports car is utterly foolish. People differ in their views, wants, and opinions in life and this is no exception. No reason to get your panties in a knot over this, it's only an online forum.

Thank you for your maturity in comparison to your age.

my maturity in comparison to my age? I'm not the 19 year old trolling on a porsche forum with a 350Z. Nor am I the magazine racer that's comparing cars pretending like I know what I'm talking about. I've driven both cars and can provide far more constructive criticisms of each than what you read about at Barns and Nobles. If you actually read my initial response, you would have seen that I made no implications to tracking the vehicle.
Don't hurt yourself using big words. You're only worthy of entertainment while I sit here listening to my Torts professor yak about defending dumbass kids like you for racing **** cars on public streets.
that's too harsh wasn't it?
damn it .. i hope I don't get a 7 day ban for this... so not worth it
With that said, I apologize for ruining someone else's thread. I agree with what was said above, test drive both, and vote with your $

Wow, guys, I was looking for opinions (which I got, thank you) but I am surprised by the defensive stance here. What gives?
I am not a Viper owner and don't think like one! For me this isn't about smoking the tires when the light goes green.
Here is the premise: I have a 2006 997 (which I didn't mod or anything) and I am looking for a car (at the 335i) for my wife (which I will drive form time to time, I'd like to pick a fun car while at it).
I don't like the looks of the dashboard in the 335i, the design of the car is otherwise fine with me. I have owned several BMWs over the years and I have been happy with their cars up to what that designer Chris guy did with the Series 5 and 7.
This being said, when it comes to my own car, it's gotta be a Porsche.
Salespeople will let you test drive but in no way allow you to handle the car the way you would without anyone sitting in the passenger seat and for no more than 20 mns. Am I wrong? Still better than nothing I suppose. Will go for a spin with the 335i.
All in all, research and experiences from other owners are important to me.
Please hammer away. Let me know, anyone owns/ played with the 335i?

I would say get an E46 M3, BUT it will be very similar to your 997, less sports car oriented.. 335 is a great alternative and with the turbo motor, different from the 997 but still a great performer and even handler for what it is!

335 I
Today I drove a 335 I sedan for the Susan B. Kommen breast cancer drive. I was handed the keys and drove on my own. I was astounded by the acceleration, handling, braking, balance, adhesion of the car. I would buy one in a heartbeat: it is THAT fun! It is a very practical car in the way that it has a useable back seat, will cost you far less in auto insurance, and has a very compliant yet nailed down ride. Drive one and see for yourself....

Having spent extensive time with a 335i coupe that has Nav, Bluetooth, voice command, keyless start, sport package, etc… it is in my opinion a better buy for the money compared to my 997 (C2 non-S) I love my C2 but when I see all of the features that the 335 has it is just a tad frustrating that you can get a fully loaded 335i, chip it, and have a car that out performs my c2 in every arena except perhaps handling and braking. Even then…..the brakes on the 335 were astounding so they may be on par if not better.
That said though, I still prefer my 997 because of the feel behind the wheel. The gearbox feels better, and the all around responsiveness is just more of what I am looking for in a sports car.
If you want a car to take more than 2 people in on a reasonably frequent basis I say go for the 335. If you will hardly ever have backseat passengers I say go 997.

I dont think so, I was a little ahead when i ran a chiped 335. And we ran like 10 times and on the 1/4 mile its no contest, almost a second difference.
