Would you buy an OEM buyback 997 Lemon?

Hello,

I am looking at buying a 2005 Carrera S that was originally a California car and was designated as a lemon. It was bought back by Porsche and the engine was replaced at 21k miles. The car is now in Canada with the second owner since it was put back onto the market and has about 33k miles. The car seems in great shape, has a detailed history on paper since it was re-sold by Porsche and has Porsche warranty until Dec 08. The car has been serviced at the local dealer and I am going to get a pre-purchase inspection at the dealer.

Is there anything I should be aware of or watch out for when buying a "lemon" (ie - if I want to upgrade to another Porsche in a year or two, will this history impair my ability to re-sell the car?)

Would appreciate any advise or comments

Thanks

You need a serious discount, yes this history will impair your ability to re sell, even if the car is perfect, same as if its been crashed and fixed perfectly. In peoples minds it has diminshed value.

If it was lemon lawed because of the engine, and they replaced it, then scoop it up if it's a good deal.

It's almost like having a salvaged title, the re-sale value will defiantly be hurt

I think maybe 20% off, but like dog said, scoop it if it's a good deal.

I would not buy the car . It it were given to me for free as a gift --I would sell the car .
The most important aspect of car ownership for me is reliability and this car has a huge avoidance factor.

For the kind of money they are asking, there are plenty of cars available without the buyback issue. You could buy a car in the US and take it over the border. There is a guy on Porsche Pete's Boxster Board who recently did this. For $73K, you should be able to get a 2006 997S, at least. I bought my 2005 S in January for just under $60K and it has only 7500 miles on it. I agree that on resale a Lemon Law branded title is like having a reconstructed or salvage title. It dramatically decreases both the value of the car and the pool of buyers who are even willing to consider it. John

I would not buy the car at that price, I bought an 06 C2S in November, more options an only 7000 miles. Bought it in Chicago and brought it up to Vancouver for only $80 (Cdn) all in (duty, fees, etc). The year and milage and the lemon buyback, I would offer 60-65 cdn or find another one.

BTW where are you in Canada?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have decided not to get the car and am going to get something newer with a clean history, lower miles and a warranty.

I am located in Calgary
