More burning oil...

I'm curious about burning oil smells. I've seen some vetting about the burning oil. Yes my '06 997S burns a quart every 2k miles. Now have 12k miles. Also had the RMS replaced as advised by my dealer in SD. Here's my question - every time I drive when I shut her off I get a burnt oil smell. More so when I drive hard...which is often. Even have had smell in the cockpit when driving. Anyone experience this?

i got my car when it had about 7000 miles. since then i've put about 6000 miles on it. So far it's burned no more than half a quart. i didn't see RMS issue, no leaks and no burnt oil smell. Car regularly sees 5k-6.5k RPM at least 4-5 times per day, so definitely not just a freeway cruiser.

My car is serviced at Pioneer Porsche, service advisor Sean Puno. I would give him a ring and see what he thinks. Nothing but great things to say about his service.

Interesting

I got mine new at Pioneer and had the RMS replaced there. They tell me the oil consumption is normal. Out of my 10 or so friends with 993/996 & 997s only one says he periodically notices the burned oil smell when turning the car off. I'm confident that I broke it in per the specs. Interesting that there is such a variance in the same car with different owners. I wonder if being hand built is a reason for the variety of tolerances.

I get this smell too very once in a while...my car uses about a quart every +/-4000 miles if driven rather aggressively.

2007 997S 6 speed w/about 9k miles.

I can't imagine that the car is designed to burn oil. Although it seems "normal" because many of us experience this, I think the more interesting question is why do many not burn oil? I'm taking mine in for the first service soon and I'll press them on this.

It may have something to do with the type of engine config. (flat 6/horizontially opposed cylinders).

500: I think he meant why do many of us, with the same engine config doesn't burn oil.

Engrossed: I would be interested in hearing what Pioneer say. My car was bought from another member here and I get the car serviced over at Pioneer. Bought my 996TT from them and had fairly good experiences with their service department. Definitely keep us posted. I will keep an eye out on my gauge. On a fairly aggressive mountain run this past weekend, I was able to drop 1 tick on the oil gauge after about 50 miles of 5k+ RPM.

so i guess if you drive like a bat out of hell, ***** to the wall from your garage to work each and everyday... = p That said, my 996TT religiously burned 1 qrt / 1k miles

Thanks for the feedback. Yes it's quite perplexing. Other guys drive theirs hard too and have no oil burn. I will keep you posted - probably won't take it in for another month or so. I'll start another thread then. Meanwhile, drive it hard and keep it happy.

Thanks...I've often wondered about 911's that don't burn any oil vs those that do. Those that get their oil changed every +/-5k miles will not notice as much (or any oil ) usage as those that wait for the longer term Porsche recommended scheduled changes which have to add more oil in between the longer intervals....with that said some cars will in fact burn more or less oil due to tolerance variations, some of which are clearly outside the norm and need to be rectified. Others that drive their cars gingerly or with lots of city stop and go, may build up fair amounts of condensation which can falsely elevate the reading for oil level.
