I kinda like the sound on mine...I often even leave the door open to listen to it. The fact that it takes a second or two gives you time to enjoy! Maybe it's my AWE exhaust...

My PSE drones like a WWII dive-bomber when driving through my low-ceiling parking deck on a cool night, before the engine has warmed.

i bought my 997 new and it has that same sound. i had never owned a 911 before that, but i remember riding in a friend's 993 about 10 years ago and it had the same sort of sound. sort of like an air cooled vw beatle engine from 30 years ago. it sort of sputters a little when starting up. i always assumed that it was just a characteristic of 911s. but it's weird. because i've driven caymans as loaners when my 997 is at the dealer. it doesn't sound anything like the 997. isn't the cayman engine just a 2.7 L version of the 997 3.6 L engine? of course, the 997 engine sounds sweet when with the pedal is to the metal.

As I read it it is not the sound of the motor on startup he is complaining about. We all agree that is cool. It is the sound of the starter motor turning the engine over that has our friend unhappy. To be honest I have never noticed this phenomenon. Either my car starts unusually quickly or we are the victims of a "crank" post.

Yes you are correct it's the sound of the starter motor cranking that I don't paticularly care for....as others have also indicated it is not only very un-refined sounding, but sluggish too.

Yes sure is and I believe they stopped making them with the Porsche powerplant sometime in the late 80's
