Robin Sun RSR Mufflers

Hello guys, I posted this on pistonheads.com but ddnt get a response, probably as they are a more common on your side of the pond.

I had a pair of RSR mufflers (from Carnewal.com) on my 993S and loved the sound. I see they are now availabel for the 997 which is great, as I dont fancy spending $3200 on a PSE setup that does not make a huge amount of difference to the sound IMO (and I'm not bothered about the switch...the neighbours can listen to my Flat 6 in all its glory).

Has anyone had experience of the RSR mufflers? Do thye sound as good as they did on the 993?..will they restore some of the magic sound that the air-cooled cars had?

Sorry, dont have a sound clip....but here the results, that I posted up on PistonHeads:

I picked my 997S up yesterday after having the RSR's fitted. For those that don't know, these are modified versions of the standard 997 mufflers/silencers - originally designed by Robin Sun in the US for the 993, but also available for the 996 and more recently, the 997. More info on how these are modified can be found below:

http://p-car.com/exhaust/

These are sold in Europe via Gert Carnewal.

Note: these are not anything to do with the exhaust items found on the GT3 RSR racecar.

Upon picking the car up, I was obviously excited and itching to hear what it sounded like - I had Robin Suns RSR's on my 993S and they were perfect, certainly loud enough, with a raspy, characterful burble. Like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdsUjII-FvY&fea...

However, upon starting the 997 I was not as ecstatic with the sound as I thought I was going to be. They are definitely a whole lot quieter than my 993 RSR's! Although Gert did advise beforehand that this would be the case as 'with the 4 valves/cylinder, the exhaust of the 996/997 will never sound like the 993 with the 2 valves/cylinder'.

So, initially there was only a slight improvement over the standard sound between 2k-3k revs, and maybe a little difference higher up the rev range. I'd say that they were somewhere between the standard and PSE sound...

Now, I had only driven the car long enough to warm it up and give it a little tickle....So when I got back to the office I emailed Gert, as I remember him saying that the original mufflers, that these RSR's were converted from, had only done very low mileage (they were pulled from dealer cars that had undergone retro fit PSE at dealerships for customers).

Bingo - Gert advised that it takes about 60mls or so before you reach 90% of the final sound, so they would get better over time. In fairness, the standard exhausts I had on my car had done 6500 miles. The RSR's that came with significantly less miles on them, and none since modification, did sound better already.

Fast forward to leaving the office last night and driving the 15 odd miles home, and I started to hear more of a difference, certainly more burble at lower speeds....but what seemed even more noticeable was that the car felt more responsive, especially at low revs (so much so, that I inadvertantly just nudged the limiter for the first time this morning, it feels that much free'er revving). Gert advises that it’s normal that you feel a better throttle response with the RSR's fitted.

In addition to this, I 'may also see a decrease in fuel consumption' (...not if I'm hooning around like a mentalist Gert!).

When I test drove a 997 and flicked the PSE switch, there didn't seem to be a big enough difference to justify spending the £1600 or so to have it retro-fitted. In addition, I personally preferred the look of the standard tips (ie. all 4 the same size) and didnt want to have to turn the sound on every time I got in the car. With a few more miles under the belt, it does seem that these RSR's have been designed to give close to the PSE sound (and remember, I have only done 35 miles or so since fitting, so there should be more to come).

The RSR set-up is a whole lot cheaper than going the factory route, so it does represent very good value for money in that respect. Fitted by a specialist, you are looking at under £500 (£350 if you are prepared to do the job yourself).

So, while the sound is not 100% what I was after (yet), I am happy nonetheless. As a package, with the benefit of the keener throttle response, I would certainly recommend it.

If you are after PSE type sound without the expense, and like me you aren't concerned about the switch-ability, this could be the answer.

Gert recommends that, if you want a louder sound, changing the cats to 200cell will definitely help...so for me, I think this will be the next step!

Love to see some video, seems like a decent mellow exhaust upgrade for the price.
Did you notice any added vibration inside the car?
