Not quite right!
I've put mufflers & headers in w/o removing the CATS so I suspect you can leave them in place if you plan to swap out just the CATS. If I recall there is just a slip ring that secures the CAT to the muffler and a header flange on the other end to the header.
It's really a pain to remove the mufflers. The mounting bracket is a ***** to get to so I recommend not removing the mufflers unless you're planning to change them out.

Michael, I just changed out my cats last week without removing the mufflers. "AP 997S" is exactly right. Loosen the slip ring and unbolt from the header. The two cats need to be lowered from the engine together for removal and elevated into position together for the reinstallation. It's a relatively simple job. I thought the trickiest part was threading the oxygen sensor cables back up to their connection points.

No need to remove the muffler. Cats can come off with cans in place.
