Valentine V1 Detector issue/question
#32
I've haven't read the previous posts in this thread, but wanted to mention that this topic was extensively discussed in another forum. At the end, the top two contenders were the Valentine V1 and Escort Passport 9500ix. I went with the Passport, and it definitely helps, but neither will save you 100% of the time. And you need to help your detector by always being aware of what's around you and slowing down in higher-risk areas, especially in an unfamiliar area. It's a bit of a burdern, but that's what it takes if you want to engage in spirited driving.
If people in this thread can summarize which detectors are good candidates, I can set up a poll in that forum so that we can see which ones are most popular.
I might also set up a poll on how often people have gotten speeding tickets. My sense is that it varies from zero to very often.

Some newer High end cars like Lexus, MB, even Infinity have Laser guided Cruise Control. That will set it off if they're directly in-front or behind you. Next time try switching lanes and see if it stops. With regards to the cop on the side of the road... Laser only work while specifically pointing at you. Unlike radar which is a blanket field that gives notice of the fastest moving target within the range, the laser target is a specific point and shoot. If your V1 doesn't go off than most likely the cop didn't point it at you.

The Valentine and Passport are both good detectors, but of course do not protect you from Laser hits. They just tell you when you've been hit, which is too late as I experienced 2 months ago on my Valentine. I used to have an Escort 8500, but got a Valentine V1 and love it. It fits better up next to my rear view mirror, and I really like the directional arrows to tell me where the signal is coming from. I know of no portable detectors that will jam ("shift") lasers. I've been tempted to get a jammer system, but since they are illegal in California, I've not done it.
I've thought about getting a laser jammer, but I've heard that some officers have laser jammer detectors, so that's an added risk.

i would never put a jammer into my car, as i do not want to end up in court and spent a ton of money on attorney.
V1 is a great little thing, after you get used to how it works it is the best radar ever. just switch it off 'default' paranoid mode.

Laser jammer are legal in most states. Radar jammers are illegal federally.

Jammers are still legal in some states. You just need to shut them off after you reduce your speed. This will allow them to get your speed and be none the wiser. They will just think it was hard to get a speed reading. What you don't want to do is jam all the way to the gun. A smart officer will know what you have done and you will have problems.
