Performance numbers for '09 Carrera S (997.2)
Ammunition for the mag racers....
Overall, very impressive: improved over last model, with better gas mileage
Information from Sport Auto and Autozeitung, originally posted at Rennteam.
Sport Auto:
NBR: 7.50
HHR: 1.13,4
0-100 km/h (0-62mph): 4.4 s
0-200 km/h (0-125mph): 14.9 s
Car was equipped with PDK and Cup tires.
Comments by Horst Von Saurma:
Pros
> further improved handling (enhanced PASM),
> better straight running stability at highspeed,
> less wind noise
Cons
> PDK interface („completely misplaced“ )
> „antiseptic“ driving experience in PDK automatic mode
> Sound less meaty at low revs (compared to 997.1)
> Steering feel a bit „synthetic“
Autozeitung:
Here are the key metrics:
(R8 - Z06 - 997s)
0-100 km/h (0-62mph): 4.4s - 4.4s - 4.4s
0-200 km/h (0-125mph): 15.2s - 13.0s - 14.5s
Top-Speed: 301kph - 320 - 302
100-0: 33.6m - 33.9 - 32.8
Timed lap: 1.40,2 - 1.39,4 - 1.39,1
Weight: 1619kg - 1440 - 1427
All cars were on regular tires. The 997s was the manual version.
Quite an impressive result for the 997s
Interesting that the manual version had a somewhat faster 0-200 km/h time.
Thoughts?

0-100kph (62mph) in 4.4 translates to 0-60 in 4.2. Thats been done w 997. Only truly significant improvement imo will be w pdk/racing start which apparently dumps the clutch (or the equivalent) at 6400 rpm and then modulates spin/slip. Somehow I can't see that happening often in the real world. I can see a real advantage w pdk on a racetrack however. Great technology for those that don't want a clutch. Personally I won't give mine up. Gerry

I am going to wait for the next car (998,991, what ever it will be called).
Until then drive my car like it was stolen!

Agree with you Ed. Hopefully in GT3 version.

Because it was $16k for about 26hp.

The track times are really an improvement as well. I still wouldn't buy PDK though, well unless it was for a turbo cab
I agree with many of you here: Keep our current cars and wait for the 991! It's also good to see Porsche keep the Carrera S (still not too happy with non-S) competitive in regards to performance numbers.

I'm not sure that upgrading means the same when you are comparing a $16K option to purchasing a new car. The 997.5 will be marginally but not significantly (.1 sec...hmmm) faster as was the X51. I don't recall the last time I came home from a ride and thought "if I had only had 25 more hp..." It is a marketing ploy meaningless on the road imo. The engine case will save them money, esp. when used in the GT3. The new transmission is a marvel if you care. Question: I see peeps referring to the yet to be released "991". The first time I thought it was a misprint but I see it again. What is going on with model designations for the future?

Theories for the model designations:
-engine designation (M96 for 996/986, M97 engine for 997): this is debunked by the fact that the new 997.2 with the new 9A1 engine is still called a 997 (but it supposedly works for the 991 )
-Crazy german mad scientist at Porsche wanted to change to 991 since everyone figured out it was a 998!
